Colin Farrell’s makeup prevented Sal from torturing him in this way on The Penguin
As a long-time fan of the Batman universe, I must admit that The Penguin has become one of my all-time favorites among DC shows. The recent episode, “Top Hat,” was nothing short of captivating, particularly the departure of Sal Maroni – a character whose vendetta against Oz Cobb (Colin Farrell) was as relentless as a bat in the night.
Last night, HBO aired another fantastic episode of “The Penguin”, the spin-off of “Batman” that seems to surpass the original film in quality. Similar to many individuals in his life, I may have underestimated the captivating nature of Oz Cobb, portrayed by Colin Farrell. However, “The Penguin” has become one of my favorite TV shows lately and I’m eagerly awaiting the finale on Sunday.
In the latest episode titled “Top Hat,” we bid farewell to a significant character, Sal Maroni (portrayed by Clancy Brown). Since Oz killed his wife and son by setting them on fire, Sal has been relentlessly seeking revenge. As Brown explained to Variety, “Sal is fixated now.” All he desires is to kill Oz. If given the chance, Sal would gladly end Oz’s life, followed by his own, as long as it meant getting his vengeance. At this point, his rage and hatred for Oz are overwhelming, leaving little room for anything else. He appears uninterested in taking out Sofia, and the Gigante-Maroni alliance means nothing to him. Instead, he is using it as a tool to reach his ultimate goal: killing Oz.
Sal has thought about various possibilities regarding his actions. It’s clear that one of those thoughts involved setting Oz ablaze; in fact, there’s a scene in the episode where Sal picks up a can of gasoline, but he ultimately decides not to use it. As Brown explained, “It was actually written into the script for a brief moment that Sal would douse Oz with gasoline after Oz mentions [Sal’s wife] Nadia and her scent, but this idea proved impractical due to the makeup. You can’t pour gasoline on makeup, as it would ruin it. Even pouring water on it could be problematic because the water would be absorbed, making the makeup waterlogged and even more uncomfortable for Colin to wear.
Initially, we both believed that since Colin was well-padded, he could handle a good swing with a golf club. So, I took a swing, but after a few attempts, he gently advised me not to be so aggressive with my swings anymore. It seems the makeup can make things appear less severe than they actually are.
Ultimately, the confrontation between Oz and Sal turns out to be underwhelming, as Sal suffers a fatal heart attack during their last battle. This outcome leaves Oz feeling let down, as he had hoped to inflict the final blow on Sal personally. Brown remarked, “I thought it was quite amusing.” The intent behind this twist was to intensify Oz’s frustration even further. Much like Sal, Oz is a formidable adversary, and he seeks a kill that will satisfy his primal instincts. However, this ending proved far from satisfying for him.
Cristin Milioti names her favorite Sofia scenes from The Penguin
It’s not just Sal who desires Oz’s demise; Sofia Falcone (played by Cristin Milioti) has come close to stealing the limelight from the main character. She harbors a grudge against Oz for his betrayal, and in the episode’s finale, she manages to deal a significant blow by destroying his operational headquarters. However, Oz survives, suggesting that their feud is far from settled.
In an interview with “Interview” magazine, director Matt Reeves — responsible for expanding the Batman cinematic universe — discussed the development of Sofia’s character alongside showrunner Lauren LeFranc. He mentioned that they drew from Carmine, a character from the comics, and elements from “The Long Halloween,” but there was also a deeply personal message that LeFranc wanted to convey through Sofia’s character. Sofia makes her appearance in an intriguing manner, leaving the audience questioning who she is and her connection with others. Initially, it seems as if she serves as a counterpart or foil, but the story unfolds to reveal how she navigates a male-dominated world that is toxic, eventually rising against it to become an inspiring force.
Regarding Milioti, she’s been showered with a great deal of appreciation for her portrayal of Sofia, to the point where there’s a strong possibility that she could receive an Emmy award alongside Colin Farrell at the upcoming awards ceremony. She recently spoke with Variety about her most cherished scenes. One of them undeniably is Sofia’s power grab in the fourth episode titled “Cent’anni,” where she delivers a seemingly conciliatory speech to her treacherous family members during dinner, only to gas them all to death later that night. Milioti stated, “That entire sequence from the moment I entered the dining room right up until the end of the episode was incredibly exhilarating.
In the movie “Top Hat,” one scene particularly resonated with her. It occurred when Sofia went to see Gia, the child of a relative she had unintentionally harmed following their dinner. Although Gia was innocent in the events that befell Sofia, she found herself in a foster home due to circumstances. To reassure herself that her actions were justified, Sofia had to make extra efforts.
I remember reading that scene and being like, ‘holy moly,’ it’s such a brutal scene. But I was so excited about it and so moved by it; it’s so complicated. But of course, this is what this person would do. What’s beautiful about that scene, too, is she’s quite literally trying to burn her father’s legacy to the ground and saying, ‘I’m nothing like him, he’s a monster,’ and she does the exact same thing to this little girl. She sentences her to the exact same life, in a way, but she truly is believing that she’s doing that child a service. In her mind, she’s doing the right thing — ‘I’m saving you from something you don’t know about’ — while ruining this child’s life.
Sofia and Oz will have their final confrontation this upcoming Sunday night on HBO and Max.
