Milla Jovovich and Betty Gabriel to star in zombie movie Twilight of the Dead

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for zombie apocalypse narratives, I can hardly contain my excitement over the upcoming movie “Twilight of the Dead.” The addition of Milla Jovovich and Betty Gabriel to the cast is a masterstroke that has me eagerly anticipating this new installment in George A. Romero’s iconic franchise.

In development now is the concluding chapter of the undead series begun by the late George A. Romero under the title “Night of the Living Dead.” Recently, we’ve been informed about some fresh faces joining the cast for this upcoming zombie movie.

The movie named “Twilight of the Dead” has announced that skilled actresses Milla Jovovich and Betty Gabriel will be part of its cast. Milla Jovovich, well-known for her portrayal as Alice in the action-horror film series “Resident Evil,” was last seen playing Tess in the sci-fi thriller “Breathe.” Besides “Twilight of the Dead,” her upcoming projects include movies such as “In the Lost Lands,” “Midnight,” and “World Breaker.

Instead, let me rephrase that for you: Unlike other actors, Gabriel is famous for playing Georgina in the hugely successful horror movie “Get Out”. She has also appeared in numerous horror films like “The Purge: Election Year”, “Unfriended: Dark Web”, and “It Lives Inside”. After her role in “Twilight of the Dead”, she will be seen next in the upcoming action-thriller “Novocaine”.

George A. Romero’s horror series, famously known as “Night of the Living Dead,” encompasses these six movies: “Night of the Living Dead” (1968), “Dawn of the Dead” (1978), “Day of the Dead” (1985), “Land of the Dead” (2005), “Diary of the Dead” (2007) and “Survival of the Dead” (2009). Additionally, there are multiple remakes and offshoots in this franchise.

Prior to his death in 2017, Romero and Paolo Zelati drafted a script for “Twilight of the Dead“. Later on, Zelati collaborated with writers Joe Knetter and Robert L. Lucas to complete the screenplay. Notably, Brad Anderson, known for directing films like “The Call” and “The Machinist“, was then tapped as director. It’s planned that filming will commence in March 2025, with Fortitude International scheduled to showcase the movie at this week’s American Film Market.

The upcoming zombie movie is set in a lush tropical island, where the remnants of humanity fight for existence amidst hordes of the undead. John Baldecchi and Sarah Donnelly are overseeing production of this film through Roundtable Entertainment. Dominic Ianno, Alex Dundas, Jason Resnick, Stephanie Caleb, and Nadine De Barros serve as executive producers.

Here’s what director Brad Anderson had to say about making this film via Deadline:

I see this film in the same way as successful post-apocalyptic thrillers such as I Am Legend, A Quiet Place, The Road and The Last of Us — genre stories that are as emotional as they are intense. When I first read Twilight of The Dead, I teared up at the end. Which is weird for a film of this type. But it has that kind of pull, that combo of horror and heartbreak that I love.
