Formula 1 adjustment strangely not made after Brazil race

As a hardcore Formula 1 enthusiast with decades of racing knowledge under my belt, I can’t help but feel a twinge of disappointment for Charles Leclerc. The man has proven his mettle time and again, yet this season seems to have slipped through his fingers like grains of sand.

In the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship, Charles Leclerc of Ferrari was disqualified from contention during the Sao Paulo Grand Prix held at Interlagos Circuit on Sunday. Now, Max Verstappen of Red Bull leads with an 86-point advantage over Leclerc, and there are three more races plus a sprint race left in the calendar, which is the longest in F1 history with 24 races.

In every Grand Prix, drivers have the chance to earn up to 26 points, with a first-place finish being worth 25 points. If a driver manages to set the quickest lap during the race and finishes within the top 10, they can also receive an extra point for their effort. On the other hand, winning a sprint race will net you eight points.

For the rest of the season, there are a total of up to 86 points available for each driver per race. If Charles Leclerc wins every remaining Grand Prix (including the fastest lap in each) and also triumphs in the final sprint race, and Max Verstappen fails to score any points in his next three races, then both drivers could potentially end with an equal number of points by the season’s end, a scenario not seen since 2017 for Verstappen.

But even then, Verstappen already owns the tiebreaker.

This year, Verstappen has triumphed in eight races so far, whereas Leclerc has only secured three wins. Consequently, with no remaining races to be held this season, it’s impossible for Leclerc to surpass Verstappen in terms of race victories before the 2024 season ends.

Yet for some reason, Leclerc is still listed as a world championship contender at sportsbooks.

At FanDuel Sportsbook, Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen is the clear favorite with odds of -6000, while Lando Norris from McLaren, the only driver who technically can challenge Verstappen, has odds of +1800. Charles Leclerc, though eliminated, still has long odds of +11000.

At DraftKings Sportsbook, Verstappen stands out as the clear front-runner with odds of -5000, while Norris trails behind at more attractive odds of +1600. Leclerc’s chances are considered long shots, with odds of +10000.

Norris trails Verstappen by 62 points.

From a devoted fan’s perspective, it’s evident that Leclerc’s chances of catching up with Verstappen have diminished significantly. Even if there were odds suggesting a tie between the two (which currently doesn’t seem likely), they wouldn’t be enticing enough to warrant a wager.

The final three races on the 2024 Formula 1 schedule are the Las Vegas Grand Prix at Las Vegas Strip Circuit, the Qatar Grand Prix at Lusail International Circuit, and the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix at Yas Marina Circuit. They are schedule to take place on Sunday, November 24; Sunday, December 1; and Sunday, December 8, respectively. The sprint is scheduled to take place in Qatar on Saturday, November 30.
