Assassin’s Creed Shadows Set to Reboot the Series’ Modern Day Story
As a gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I have witnessed the evolution of the Assassin’s Creed series from a fresh perspective. The modern day narrative has always been a unique selling point for the franchise, but it seems like it’s finally time for a much-needed reboot in “Assassin’s Creed Shadows“.
After Desmond’s storyline in the Assassin’s Creed series concluded, the franchise has faced challenges in continuing its broader narrative, which involves a contemporary character experiencing history through an ancestor’s eyes via the Animus. This aspect of the game has often taken a backseat to the historical settings provided by each Assassin’s Creed game, but it seems that Assassin’s Creed Shadows aims to rejuvenate the modern day elements of the series.
According to Marc-Alexis Côté during a BAFTA gathering, deciding to conclude Desmond’s storyline was challenging and after that, the contemporary narrative had trouble maintaining its balance. Following Desmond’s departure from the story, Layla Hassan assumed control through a mobile Animus, but her quest for vague ancient artifacts often lacked the appeal or significance it needed. According to Côté, the persistent emphasis on characters chasing Isu artifacts in the storyline made it more foreseeable, and transformed the struggle between Templars and Assassins into a simple power grab over – let’s face it – enchanted treasures. This change diverted attention from what had always been central to the series: delving into our past.
Moreover, Côté noted that the narrative evolved into something repetitive, causing both players and critics to perceive the contemporary plotline as secondary or even like a side-mission, rather than an essential aspect of the total gaming experience. Furthermore, he pointed out that the accumulated complexity of fifteen years’ worth of lore focusing on the modern story arc created a mental burden that made it challenging for newcomers to engage with the franchise.
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Côté aims to place history at the heart of players’ adventures. The modern-day aspect of the game will be used to enrich, rather than overshadow, the historical expedition. This involves creating a significant difference between past and present, with the storyline delving into profound themes such as memory, identity, and autonomy. It also examines how the past shapes our identities and how controlling the past can influence our future.
He continued by saying: “These themes serve as a mirror for current topics: freedom vs control, the influence of knowledge and the struggle between individuality and uniformity, all seen through the prism of history. Our upcoming game, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, will be the starting point for this narrative transformation that will develop in the coming years.
In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, we have a fresh starting point for the contemporary tale, yet its final shape is still uncertain. It’s probable that much of it will be communicated via the Assassin’s Creed Infinity hub, but the specifics will likely become clearer when Assassin’s Creed Shadow releases on February 14, 2025.
