90s R’n’B singer Shanice, 51, diagnosed with breast cancer after skipping mammograms for 8 years
As a lifestyle expert with a deep appreciation for resilience and personal growth, I can’t help but be moved by Shanice’s story. Her journey from a 14-year-old music sensation to a breast cancer survivor is nothing short of inspiring.
1990s R&B artist Shanice disclosed that she received a breast cancer diagnosis this year, having neglected regular mammograms for a period of eight years.
51-year-old artist famous for “I Love Your Smile,” initially shared about her stage one cancer diagnosis in September. She later disclosed that she had a double mastectomy, during which a tiny 1-centimeter tumor was discovered within her breast.
This week on Good Morning America, the celebrity revealed that eight years prior, doctors initially thought they’d discovered a breast tumor in her – however, subsequent tests confirmed it was actually a cyst. Her apprehension towards mammograms prevented her from undergoing regular check-ups.
She lamented the choice she made, saying: “Had I acted quicker, I might have detected it at its earliest stage.
Don’t let fear control you. With an early detection, you stand a good chance of overcoming this issue. It isn’t a guarantee of doom. Should you catch it early, your life will continue.
In March, I went through a screening procedure after discovering a lump in my breast. Initially, doctors suspected it might be stage zero Ductal Carcinoma In Situ (DCIS), a form of breast cancer that targets the milk ducts.
She had a double mastectomy in May – during which doctors found the tumor in her chest.
She said: ‘When I had my surgery and they told me I had cancer, I literally lost my smile. But I wanted to come on the show to encourage women that you have to keep smiling. I got my smile back.’
In September, Shanice posted from the hospital, revealing her diagnosis and saying: ‘Greetings everyone on this Sunday… God is a healer. Exactly three months ago, I underwent a double mastectomy. A one-centimeter tumor at stage one was discovered in my breast. Thanks to early detection, I’m here today. I wasn’t prepared to discuss it earlier, but now, I feel ready and strong enough to share my experience.’
Here’s a suggestion for paraphrasing the text:
I appreciate the love and support from my dear friends and family, as well as the help from @flexaforeal during the toughest moments in my life. Thank you all!
“Every day, you assisted me with my drains and prepared all my meals. I adore you. Through Jesus, I feel healed and renewed. Many thanks to @therealdrjackie for the gift basket! @frostchild, thank you for accompanying me to my doctor’s appointment; I pray for your recovery as well. To @toyialjackson and @donyelledenise8, I also pray for your healing. I love you all.
She added: ‘I am healed and restored in Jesus name.’
In 1987, Shanice made her debut on the music stage, publishing her initial album “Discovery” when she was just 14 years old.
The well-known singer, known by her full name Shanice Lorraine Wilson-Knox, gained fame among fans and secured two top 10 R&B chart hits following the release of the album.
Following her signing with Motown Records in 1991, Shanice continued to flourish musically with hits such as Silent Prayer, Saving Forever for You, and When I Close My Eyes.
Originally hailing from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she eventually relocated to Los Angeles alongside her mother Crystal and aunt Penni.
They made the move as her mother and aunt were hoping to pursue music careers there.
Instead, it was Shanice herself who took the step into singing and pop music, motivated by her family members.
At the age of eight, she featured in a KFC commercial alongside Ella Fitzgerald. Subsequently, at the tender age of eleven, she appeared on the television show Star Search.
The singer’s vocal talents have been featured in various movie soundtracks, such as those for Pocahontas and The Meteor Man.
She also did backing vocals for Toni Braxton on her tune Un-Break My Heart.
For approximately two decades, the star has been wedded to the entertainer and humorist, Flex Alexander – a union that began when they exchanged vows in February 2000.
They are parents to Imani Knox, 23, and Elijah Alexander Knox, 20.
