Nouns steps out of the Dota 2 scene: NA has only one team left
As a long-time fan of Dota 2, I’ve witnessed the highs and lows that teams go through, but the news about Nouns’ departure from the competitive scene hits close to home. I’ve followed their journey since their days with 4Zoomers, and it’s heartbreaking to see them struggle financially despite their love for the game.
The fate of the North American team, which was once a beacon of hope in Dota 2, remains unclear. Their division has departed from the competitive scene, leaving their players unsure about their next move.
Dota 2 continues to thrive as an expanding esport, with up-and-coming teams such as AVULUS and Palianytsia making their mark in Europe. Notable players like Satanic and Fortniteman maintain excitement within the community about new talent. Most recently, South America made history by winning its first international title, as HEROIC outplayed Falcons at the PGL Wallachia S2 tournament.
Nonetheless, North America has been grappling with its most challenging season in recent times. With the news of Nouns leaving the Dota 2 competitive scene, Shopify Rebellion stands as the sole sponsored team participating in the region. This move follows their dismal performance at DreamLeague S24, a discouraging outcome for North America’s only Tier 1 international tournament representative.
In their official statement, the team emphasizes that playing Dota 2 is equally challenging and profitable, whether we’re talking about competition or business. This implies that they relied on the prize money from DreamLeague S24 to cover their operational expenses. If they didn’t perform well in the tournament and failed to secure additional sponsorships, the team would struggle to meet the financial demands of supporting their roster.
The message implies that their affection for Dota 2 endures, and given the right circumstances, they might re-enter the competitive sphere. Regrettably, the Dota 2 team is no longer participating due to minimal sponsorship interest within the professional scene.
Did Nouns disband their Dota 2 team?
Following the announcement, Nicolas “Gunnar” Lopez expressed on X platform that it remains uncertain if they will compete in the next ESL qualifiers as a team. He expressed his appreciation for the journey from 4Zoomers (his initial North American team post-comeback) to Nouns. Gunnar mentioned, “If we can find a way to align everyone’s interests, we might need to brainstorm some ideas for our team name.
It’s evident that the team needs to figure out their financing options for the upcoming bootcamp. With the North American Closed Qualifiers for ESL One Bangkok approaching swiftly, time is of the essence. If they can’t arrange a way to play as a unit, they might be compelled to participate in the Open Qualifiers, commencing on November 11th.
