I’ve noticed that shows based on books are everywhere lately, especially this year! It seems like if you adapt a popular book, you’re almost guaranteed a hit. We’ve seen it with shows like His & Hers, 56 Days, Scarpetta, Young Sherlock, and Imperfect Women – they all did incredibly well. And now, Netflix’s new series, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole, is following right along, already at the top of the charts worldwide just four days after it came out. It’s amazing how well these adaptations are doing!
According to FlixPatrol, Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole is now the most popular show on Netflix globally. It’s currently number one in several countries, including Argentina, Denmark, Finland, and Jo Nesbø’s home country, Norway. In the United States, the show is currently ranked fifth in viewership.
What Is Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole About?
I’m a huge fan of Jo Nesbø – he’s truly Norway’s most successful author, having sold over 50 million books around the globe! I especially love his Harry Hole series. It began in 2012 with Flaggermusmannen, which was published as The Bat here in the US. He’s continued the series with twelve more books since then, and I can’t wait to read them all!
The Netflix series Detective Hole, based on the novels by Jo Nesbø, features Tobias Santelmann as Harry Hole. Like many TV adaptations of book series, Netflix didn’t follow the books’ original order. Instead, they chose a story that would make a strong first season, and that turned out to be the fifth book, The Devil’s Star.
In The Devil’s Star, detective Harry Hole investigates a disturbing case involving a killer who leaves a pentagram marked on the eyelids of his victims. Simultaneously, Harry deals with a strained and distrustful working relationship with a colleague he suspects of corruption. The novel is often dark and graphic, and it reveals a more troubled side to Harry Hole’s character.
Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole Is Also a Hit with Critics
The series also received positive reviews from critics. It currently holds a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on their assessments. Richard Roeper of RogerEbert.com commented that while the show is already good, it has the potential to become truly great if future seasons are more streamlined and focused, given the abundance of source material available.
In a review for the Daily Telegraph (UK), Anita Singh praised the new TV adaptation, noting that because the author wrote the script himself, it stays true to his original intent and should please fans. She specifically mentioned that this version will likely be a welcome change for those who were disappointed with the 2017 film, The Snowman, which was another adaptation of a Harry Hole novel and wasn’t successful.
Jo Nesbø wrote all the episodes of his Netflix series, Detective Hole, which is good news for fans of the books. When an author is closely involved in adapting their own work, it often leads to a high-quality TV show.
Jo Nesbø’s Detective Hole is available to stream on Netflix worldwide.
