Wild, weird and wacky! A look back at the biggest fashion fails in the Melbourne Cup Carnival’s history
As a fashion connoisseur with years of experience under my belt, I must say that some of these outfits at the Melbourne Cup left me scratching my head in disbelief.
There has been no shortage of fashion disasters over the years during the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
However, it was Gabi Grecko’s bold appearance at The Birdcage in 2014, accompanied by her partner Geoffrey Edelsten, that left a lasting impression with its striking, unconventional style.
Previously known as a prostitute, she, who had a romantic relationship with the deceased entrepreneur after his separation from Brynne, wore a corset reminiscent of a clown and a headdress adorned with feathers.
Gliding confidently amidst the glamorous gathering of celebrities, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of pride swelling within me, much like a majestic peacock displaying its resplendent feathers. The collective gasps of astonishment from the crowd below were like whispers on the wind, echoing the impact of my presence.
In the year 2010 during the Melbourne Cup Day, Geoffrey’s ex-wife Brynne too found herself in the limelight, but unfortunately not for positive reasons.
She raised eyebrows with her extravagant feather headdress that plumed high above her.
The bird-like headpiece was matched with a similarly uncommon dress embellished with bright embroidery.
Approximately a year past, Brynne chose an unusual ensemble once more, this time donning a vibrant pink dress illuminated like neon alongside a coordinating floral headdress and footwear.
She was spotted standing alongside her former spouse Geoffrey, both donned in all-white ensembles, right down to the white dress shoes on his feet.
Lately, trendsetting figure Pip Edwards found herself on the ‘Worst Dressed’ list after her cowboy-themed ensemble for Derby Day 2022 fell short of fashionable expectations.
Her choice was met with criticism due to an over-the-top hat that didn’t complement her ill-fitting suit.
She suffered another mishap in 2023 when she paired an all-white outfit with a trucker cap.
The co-founder of P.E Nation chose to wear a see-through skirt over shorts, intentionally exposing her legs completely.
She topped the ensemble with an oversized blazer and a large white clutch.
In the same year, Crystal Kimber attempted to earn the title of worst-dressed, showcasing an ensemble adorned excessively with bows.
As a die-hard admirer, I must say that each piece of Crystal’s ensemble – her dress, shoes, and headpiece – was stunningly beautiful on their own. Yet, with so many captivating elements, it became a challenge for any single part to truly stand out and capture the spotlight individually.
Back in 2006, tennis star Lleyton Hewitt’s wife, Bec, made quite an impression at The Birdcage event by entering hand-in-hand with him, creating a noteworthy moment.
She wore a strange top resembling a boob tube paired with white bike shorts.
The Home and Away actress appeared to misunderstand the occasion’s motif by donning black and white attire, which are typically associated with Derby Day. Additionally, her outfit failed to comply with the stringent dress code set by the Victorian Racing Club.
The VRC’s website states that certain types of clothing, including short jumpsuits, tops exposing the midriff, and shorts, are considered inappropriate.
To finish off her unique ensemble, Bec chose a misshaped top with a white coat, black and white flip-flops, and a black handbag adorned with rhinestones.
She accessorised with a ruffled fascinator in her tightly curled hair and wore a white Dior watch.
In the year 2021, Michelle Payne, the victorious jockey, adorned an all-turquoise outfit. This ensemble was highlighted by a modern icicle-shaped fascinator and a dress with multiple tiers that resembled a decorative wrapper of a chocolate box.
Her appearance was ethereal, enhanced by her radiant golden glow and sophisticated hairstyle, yet her vibrant and unconventional color scheme and unusual accessories detracted from the overall impression.
In 2021, the MasterChef Australia judge, Melissa Leong, faced a fashion mishap when her accessory selection seemed to clash with her elaborate eye makeup and vibrant lime green high heels. The plastic wrap she wore didn’t seem to enhance her overall look.
Despite her consistently stylish reputation, Bec Judd, who frequently attends racing carnivals, has had some fashion mishaps throughout her time.
2009 saw her make a striking appearance on the Crown Oaks Day red carpet, donning an unusual smock dress adorned with tulle and showcasing different hues of beige.
She finished off her unforgettable style by adding a coordinating beige sinamay hat decorated with feathers and lace.
On Melbourne Cup Day in 2011, the wife of an AFL player opted for an eye-catching ensemble. Her dress boasted a distinctive design reminiscent of a bib in bright neon yellow, adorned with tribal-style jewelry around her neck and a striking electric blue feather headdress that was quite large.
In 2016, mining tycoon Gina Rinehart attracted attention on Melbourne Cup Day due to the extravagant assortment of accessories adorning her outfit.
From her ostrich feather handbag to the heavily-netted hatinator that obscured half her face, the glamorous businesswoman certainly didn’t hold back.
Speaking as a lifestyle expert, I must say that when I attended Melbourne Cup Day in 2014, I couldn’t help but notice that even the fabulous Tiffiny Hall of “The Biggest Loser” fame was sporting a fashionably quirky hat, much like mine. It just goes to show that expressing personal style is an art form, and we all have our unique ways of doing it!
Though the personal trainer carefully chose a subtle dress paired with a striking hat, some spectators found themselves questioning if the hat was appropriate attire.
Similar observations apply to various bold and eccentric ensembles sported by model Ashley Hart, famous for her penchant for vibrant race-day attire and extravagant headgear.
Back in 2014, Jess Hart’s sibling turned heads at Flemington Racecourse, donning an eye-catching blue gown boasting an unusual peplum design shaped like a tulip.
Approximately a year had passed, and she found herself back on the list of least fashionable individuals. This time, she donned a dress adorned with a dizzying pattern, along with various incompatible accessories.
2016 Melbourne Cup saw fashion icon Kate Waterhouse captivate spectators with her theatrically designed Gucci gown, adorned extravagantly with pearls as its main highlight.
Though Kate’s unique dress wasn’t necessarily a poor fashion choice for the stylist, the excessively adorned hat and heavy golden footwear caused the ensemble to lean heavily towards over-the-top style.
In 2015, during the Melbourne Cup, Sam Frost, the Bachelorette, opted for a fashionably bustling appearance by donning a square-cut jumper dress adorned with a robotic motif.
Sam’s mismatched silver headband and black lace-up heels also failed to enhance her strange dress.
In that very same year, Rob Mills didn’t escape criticism when he attended the Melbourne Cup. He wore a puzzling jacket adorned with miniature medals, which is unusual for a musical theater performer.
2011 saw the elegant host, Sonia Kruger, experience an unfortunate fashion mishap. She walked out wearing a vibrant red satin gown and matching trench coat.
Her vibrant appearance didn’t match well with Sonia’s tanned skin tone, whereas the unusual hat worn by the Today Extra hosts resembled a mushroom and was noticeable.
