Buddy Matthews has the talent to shine as a singles performer
As a seasoned gamer who’s seen countless wrestling matches and followed the careers of numerous performers, I can’t help but feel a pang of sympathy for Buddy Matthews. Here’s a guy with undeniable talent, a man whose Cruiserweight Championship reign in the WWE was nothing short of spectacular, yet he remains on the sidelines in AEW.
As a wrestling fan immersed in the AEW universe, I’ve got to admit there are some incredibly gifted performers gracing our screens every week. The game of guessing who might be crowned champion is always intriguing, with numerous names popping up on endless lists. However, one name that stands out for me is Buddy Matthews – a guy who’s yet to secure the singles championship title during his time here. What’s even more fascinating is that he seems to be far from getting any significant momentum in the singles division at all. I remember when he first joined All Elite Wrestling, many wrestling enthusiasts thought Buddy would finally get his chance to shine on his own. Yet, here we are, and it seems like that opportunity might still be a long way off for him.
Matthews made his move to AEW in 2022 following his departure from WWE. In the WWE circle, he was one of those performers whose talent surpassed his on-screen storylines. His impressive 183-day tenure as Cruiserweight Champion cemented his reputation for those who had doubts about his skills. During this period, he delivered some of the most outstanding wrestling matches. Regrettably, that was his only stint with a singles championship in any significant promotion within the industry.
After joining AEW, there was swift curiosity about where Matthews would fit in the lineup. He chose to align with Malakai Black and Brody King, forming the House of Black as their third member. Although the group had some victories together, they didn’t achieve any significant milestones during their rule. In many aspects, this period solidified Matthews as a type of “supporting” talent who helped elevate others.
On the All Elite Wrestling (AEW) roster, he’s had 12 individual matches, resulting in a 3-9 win-loss record as recorded by wrestling database, Cagematch. This performance falls short of what fans might expect from him, but it’s become typical that he’s seldom mentioned as a threat in the singles division. However, his talent is undeniable, and if given a chance to compete for titles like the International or TNT Championship, he could excel. In fact, a run with Ring of Honor could see him become their champion. Tony Khan has reportedly paid Matthews generously to prevent him from joining WWE, but this investment hasn’t yielded as much success in the ring as hoped. It’s unfortunate that his potential isn’t fully being realized in the wrestling arena. This is not because he lacks talent anywhere.
There are numerous paths for Buddy Matthews to excel as a solo act within AEW. Freeing him from the House of Black could provide another exceptional singles performer, boosting the reputation of “AEW: Where The Best Wrestle.” Matthews possesses all the necessary skills and qualities, but due to the roster’s depth, he hasn’t had a chance to truly shine in this manner yet.
