See what Seong Gi-hun is up to in the first story trailer for Squid Game season 2
As a survivor of the ruthless Squid Game, I can attest that the experience left an indelible mark on my soul. The return of this haunting series, with its stark commentary on capitalism and human nature, is both exhilarating and terrifying.
Squid Game, a biting critique of excessive capitalism that shows people drowning in debt who risk their lives for a glimmer of financial stability, skyrocketed to become Netflix’s most-watched series when it premiered in 2021. Naturally, Netflix leveraged its popularity by creating a reality TV spinoff, failing to grasp the show’s underlying message. Yet, the original is returning with a second season, leaving us wondering what new miseries lie ahead.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve been eagerly awaiting updates on the next chapter of Squid Game, and finally, we have our first glimpse! In this new teaser, it appears that our protagonist, Seong Gi-hun (played by Lee Jung-jae), is back in action. Interestingly, he’s shed his distinctive neon orange-red hairdo from the previous season, a change I can certainly appreciate.
The issue lies in that they fail to heed his advice, as they are so eager for the grand reward, despite the fact that all but one of them are destined to perish while attempting to obtain it. This scenario appears to be a critique of capitalism. In the final episode of season one, Seong Gi-hun vowed to bring down the wealthy idlers who engineered these games for their entertainment as they watched the less fortunate struggle and often die. Undoing such an unjust system will undoubtedly prove challenging. Overthrowing an unjust system is a difficult task indeed.
Like The Hunger Games, Squid Game is a series where people battle to the death for the entertainment of the elite. Both stories share some structural similarities, with characters returning to the games in their second installments – Seong Gi-hun in season 2 of Squid Game and Katniss Everdeen in Catching Fire, the second book of The Hunger Games series. Many consider Catching Fire to be the best of The Hunger Games series. Here’s hoping that the upcoming second season of Squid Game, set to release on Netflix on December 26, lives up to expectations, and a third and final season will conclude the story in the following year.
