First trailer for Stephen Soderbergh’s Presence creates a palpable sense of unease
As a gamer with a penchant for horror movies, I must say that Stephen Soderbergh’s latest offering, “Presence,” is shaping up to be a chilling masterpiece. With a career spanning from “Traffic” to “Ocean’s Eleven,” Soderbergh has proven his versatility, but this ghostly first-person perspective promises an entirely new level of immersion.
Experience a unique take on horror films such as The Conjuring, Hereditary, or Paranormal Activity, but this time from the entity’s point of view. Introducing Stephen Soderbergh’s newest creation, Presence. Having made its premiere at Sundance earlier in the year to rave reviews, Neon has snatched up the distribution rights, and come January 17, 2025, you can witness Presence on the big screen.
Titled “Presence“, this one-of-a-kind horror movie is filmed entirely from the perspective of the first person, offering an unparalleled view into the spectral entity tormenting a family. During its premiere at Sundance, the director shared insights about crafting a film seen through the eyes of a ghost. He disclosed that he navigated the set wearing martial arts slippers and self-filmed most of the movie over a span of just three weeks while holding the camera.
The movie titled Presence follows a common horror movie trope: A pair (portrayed by Lucy Liu and Chris Sullivan) settle into a house with a haunted past. The recently released teaser trailer from Neon effectively creates an unsettling atmosphere and suspense without revealing the storyline. Instead, it concentrates on conveying the film’s overall mood and innovative cinematography, leaving viewers intrigued without giving away any plot twists.
Following their previous collaboration on the 2022 thriller “Kimi,” Steven Soderbergh has reunited with screenwriter David Koepp for the project titled “Presence“. They are also currently working together on Soderbergh’s upcoming espionage thriller “Black Bag” which features Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender in the lead roles.
2024 saw Neon shine brightly, with the success of its blockbuster movie “Longlegs” being a major highlight. This film broke records as the highest-grossing independent horror film in the nation. The company also handled releases like “Cuckoo” and the critically acclaimed Palme d’Or winner, “Anora”, which is expected to secure multiple Academy Award nominations. 2025 looks promising for Neon with the release of “Presence”, followed by Oz Perkins’ next movie, “The Monkey”, who directed “Longlegs”.
