Is Star Trek: Legacy the only way we can see Captain Liam Shaw again?

As a seasoned Trekkie who’s journeyed through the cosmos since the days of Kirk and Spock, I must say, Captain Liam Shaw has proven to be an unexpected yet delightful addition to the Star Trek universe. His transformation from a frosty, hard-to-like captain to a man willing to sacrifice himself for the greater good was nothing short of captivating.

Originally, Captain Liam Shaw [portrayed by Todd Stashwick], who initially clashed with Admiral Picard [Patrick Stewart] and Captain Riker [Jonathan Frakes] and refused to use Seven of Nine’s [Jeri Ryan] preferred name, was seen as unpopular among fans due to his sarcastic and aloof demeanor. However, throughout the short-lived Star Trek: Picard series, Shaw underwent a transformation, even relinquishing command of the Titan to Seven of Nine and advocating for her promotion to captain. His character’s redemption arc was skillfully executed in such a limited number of episodes. Unfortunately, Captain Shaw met his end before the season concluded, and while discussions have taken place between Terry Matalas and Stashwick about resurrecting the character, it appears this will only happen if Star Trek: Legacy gets the go-ahead.

But there are other ways the franchise could reintroduce this incredible character even without Legacy. Holograms never go out of style on Star Trek, and neither do alternate timelines. There is time travel, of course, with the potential for even the crew members of the Enterprise under the leadership of Captain Pike [Anson Mount} to meet the captain, perhaps before he encountered Picard as Locutus of Borg. If that series can bring animated characters to live-action, nothing is off-limits.

It’s possible that Star Trek creators didn’t anticipate Shaw becoming so popular, but given his popularity now, it seems fitting for the decision-makers to find a way to reintroduce him to the universe, even if just for a few episodes. This would help keep him fresh in fans’ minds. After all, Starfleet Academy is bringing back Robert Picardo’s character from the Emergency Medical Hologram into the 32nd century. So, who knows? Maybe Shaw could be used as a historical lesson for cadets, or we might see a narrative similar to Star Trek: Voyager’s “Flashback” play out in a current or future episode or movie.

Given the enthusiasm fans have shown towards this character, it would be a pity not to utilize him further, considering all we still don’t know about him. Therefore, it’s not just Legacy that could bring Shaw back; there are other possibilities. Personally, I’m hoping for more appearances from him in the future.
