Angelina Jolie recently sold her New York City apartment, and some people are wondering if this indicates financial difficulties.
Last summer, she sold the condo she’d owned since 1997. The sale price wasn’t made public.
This news follows reports that the 50-year-old actress may be facing financial difficulties and is planning to sell her Los Angeles home, which she bought in 2017 for $24.5 million.
I was really surprised to learn that Jolie officially transferred ownership of her Upper West Side property on July 18, 2025, according to the property deed the Daily Mail got their hands on. It took a little while to show up in public records, though ā it wasnāt actually recorded until August 4th.
The property was sold by an individual and purchased by Ansoniasix, LLC. It’s located within The Ansonia, a condominium building on Broadway that was once the Ansonia Hotel.
Although the official paperwork didn’t state the sale price, online real estate listings suggest the property was worth approximately $1.8 million. Jolie originally bought the property in December 1997 for $490,000, financing it with a $343,000 mortgage.
In 2022, the property underwent an interior renovation, valued at $35,200.
During an interview in March 2025, Angelina Jolie shared that one of her sons, reportedly Maddox, who is now 24, was using an apartment as a temporary place to stay.
Angelina Jolie and her ex-husband, Brad Pitt, share three children: Maddox, Pax (22), and Zahara (21). They also have Shiloh (19) and 17-year-old twins, Knox and Vivienne.
On the West Coast, Jolie owns a large, historic home in Los Angeles called the Cecil B. DeMille estate, where the famous director lived for four decades. Court documents show Pitt gave her $8 million to purchase it.
Jolie has publicly shared her desire to move away from California, explaining sheās currently staying only because of an agreement made in her divorce from Brad Pitt. She plans to move once all of her children are adults, and her twins will turn eighteen in July.
She mentioned in an interview that she intends to spend a significant amount of time in Cambodia in the future.
Last August, reports surfaced that Angelina Jolie was looking to sell her Los Angeles house. A source told People magazine she was considering buying property in several international locations, including Cambodia, France, and various parts of Africa.
‘I’ll spend time visiting my family members wherever they may be in the world,’ the actress said.Ā
In 2002, after adopting her son Maddox from Cambodia, Angelina Jolie bought a traditional wooden house in the Cambodian countryside. She later expanded this by purchasing over 148,000 acres of land around the house to establish a wildlife sanctuary.
According to a source who spoke with the Daily Mail, leaving California will be difficult for her, as some of her children are independent and live their own lives, often apart from her.
According to a source, the children have established lives with their friends, school commitments, and long-held hobbies, particularly after their parentsā divorce. Knox, for example, doesnāt intend to move from Los Angeles anytime soon. Heās deeply committed to Muay Thai, essentially training as a full-time fighter, and plans to become an instructor after graduation.
Shiloh is now working as a choreographer in Los Angeles, and Zahara is on track to graduate from Spelman College in Atlanta, Georgia, later this year.
Earlier this year, gossip columnist Rob Shuter reported that he’d heard Angelina Jolie is having a hard time maintaining her current way of life in Los Angeles.
According to a source, she isn’t poor, but she’s definitely not wealthy. The expensive legal fight with Brad Pitt over their shared wine estate in France, Miraval, has used up her money much quicker than expected.
The legal fees in this case have been incredibly high. According to a Hollywood lawyer with knowledge of the situation, the costs are being spent rapidly with little to show for it, and even someone as wealthy as Angelina Jolie is feeling the financial strain.
Angelina Jolie filed for divorce from Brad Pitt in 2016 following a difficult incident on a private plane while traveling from France to Los Angeles. Jolie claimed Pitt physically and verbally abused her and one of their children during the flight, allegations he has refuted.
The FBI investigated the claims but decided not to file any charges against Pitt. Additionally, the Department of Child and Family Services found no evidence of abuse.
What followed was a heated divorce battle that was only finalized on December 30, 2024.Ā
The couple continues to disagree about ChĆ¢teau Miraval, a $500 million French winery, and the legal battle surrounding their shared ownership ā often called ‘the war of the rosĆ©s’ ā is ongoing.
Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie bought Miraval winery in 2011, with Pitt initially owning 60% and Jolie owning 40%. Before their wedding in 2013, Pitt gave Jolie an additional 10% share, making their ownership equal.
Brad Pitt invested heavily in the vineyard, capitalizing on the growing popularity of rosƩ wine and significantly expanding the business. As a result, sales tripled, and the property, originally purchased for around $60 million, quickly increased in value to approximately $164 million.
In 2022, Brad Pitt sued Angelina Jolie for $35 million. This came less than a year after Jolie sold her half of their winery to Russian businessman Yuri Shefler for $67 million, without getting Pittās approval.
Brad Pitt, currently dating jewelry designer Ines de Ramon, claims Angelina Jolie violated their agreement regarding a purchase they made together.
Legal documents show Jolie previously offered to sell her share to Pitt for $54 million, but the deal fell apart because of his conditions.
Court documents obtained by the Daily Mail show that in December of last year, the court sided with Brad Pitt and ordered Angelina Jolie to provide emails and texts she exchanged with her team about the sale of her business share. Essentially, the court compelled her to turn over these communications.
According to Brad Pitt’s lawyers, Angelina Jolie is not providing almost two dozen emails and other communications they’ve requested. A source familiar with Pitt’s case claims these messages would demonstrate that Jolie hasn’t been truthful about the sale from the beginning.
Paul Murphy, representing Jolie, expressed disappointment with the court’s decision regarding California’s legal protections for confidential communications. He stated the ruling infringes on Jolieās right to a fair trial and is part of a continuing pattern of harassment and control by Pitt. They plan to appeal the decision.
Litigation could continue for another year, with a trial date set for February 2027.Ā
Legal documents obtained by the Daily Mail show that the Jolie-Pitt Foundation, the charity founded by the former couple, is struggling financially.
In 2024, their tax return indicated they didn’t meet their financial goals, with a total loss of $473,853 when looking at their overall income and expenses, and a $476,343 loss from their income-generating activities. Despite this, they still held $1,618,205 in total assets at the end of the year.
As of April 2025, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt remain on the company’s board of directors. Jolie serves as the Chief Executive Officer, while Pitt holds the positions of Secretary and Chief Financial Officer.
Angelina Jolie is also involved in a legal dispute regarding her shop, Atelier Jolie, in New York City. The space, which includes an art center and a small cafe, is located in a building that once served as the home of the famous artist Jean-Michel Basquiat. Jolie signed an eight-year lease for the property in 2023.
Since July 2024, a trademark dispute has been happening regarding Atelier Jolie. It started when an art gallery in Allentown, Pennsylvania, called Atelier Jolie Gallery formally objected to Angelina Jolieās attempt to trademark the name.
According to a recent document obtained by the Daily Mail, dated December 2025, both sides have asked the court to pause the case for three months while they continue to try and reach a settlement.
Representatives for Jolie have not responded to requests for comment.Ā
