Strictly star Adam Thomas reveals he is in ‘unbearable pain’ and can ‘barely walk’ as he shares an update on his debilitating health battle
As a compassionate observer, I find Adam Thomas‘s journey truly inspiring. His unyielding spirit and determination to keep going despite the constant pain he has been experiencing for over two years is commendable. It’s heartening to see how he refuses to let his condition beat him.
Adam Thomas recently disclosed that he’s experiencing intense, unrelenting discomfort because of his persistent struggle with arthritis, as he offered an update to his fans on Instagram on a weekday.
Previously recognized Strictly Come Dancing contestant, aged 36, openly discussing his ordeal, confessed that the severe symptoms of the condition have left him struggling to walk with ease.
Previously, it was disclosed that Adam has been experiencing daily pain for about two years now. Last year, he was officially diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis.
Rheumatoid arthritis is a persistent health issue characterized by discomfort, inflammation, and rigidity in the joints; at present, it does not have a known remedy.
The Waterloo Road actor recently shared an update about himself, posting a monochrome photo of himself wearing a coat, accompanied by a detailed message.
He wrote: ‘The pain is pretty unbearable at the moment, it’s as if my whole body is seizing up! The pain was bad before, but it’s a lot worse now… how why’.
Speaking about his treatment, he expressed regret saying, “I’d rather still be on the methotrexate, even with its side effects, than endure this pain daily!
Today marks the beginning of my 12-week medication regimen, but it may not offer relief during that time or even work at all. Since my steroid injections only provided temporary relief for about a week, I’m uncertain about how to manage my pain in the meantime.
Adam disclosed that he was pursuing additional care due to persistent agony, stating, “This isn’t a life I can continue living.
Sharing his day-to-day challenges, he went on to say: “This morning, I found it impossible to dress myself without help, let alone drive to work. To be honest, I can barely walk, and my wrists and fingers feel as if they are fractured – that’s no overstatement!
If not for the need to work, I probably would have stayed in bed this morning. However, things improved as the day went on, thanks to a generous amount of painkillers!
Wow, the past few days have been quite frightening! I even shed a tear today; sometimes, it all becomes overwhelming!
“I’m not sharing this for a pity party, but to raise awareness about this disease. Many people are experiencing similar struggles, some good, some bad, and some truly difficult. I consider myself fortunate to have a strong support system, but not everyone does. If you’re going through the same thing and feel alone, know that I see you, I understand what you’re going through.
“Things will improve, hang in there! If you know someone who’s struggling, reach out and offer your support – give them a call or check-in on them.
In the recent past, as I’ve been navigating my personal journey with arthritis, I’ve shared that I’ve been experiencing some challenges in my mobility.
Last August, he shared his diagnosis for the first time, and this was just before he prepared to join BBC’s Strictly. As a result, he found it difficult to walk prior to his dance debut in September.
After providing regular updates about his health, Adam recently gave an extensive update detailing his current state, disclosing that the adverse effects of methotrexate injections proved to be excessive for him, prompting him to explore a different type of medication.
Apart from those with rheumatoid arthritis, methotrexate is frequently prescribed for individuals dealing with psoriasis, Crohn’s disease, as well as cancer patients.
The main side-effect of taking such a drug is an increased inclination to catch and suffer worse from infections such as Covid-19 and the flu.
In a post, he shared: “For those familiar, I’ve been using methotrexate injections for an extended period, but the side effects became overwhelming. I’ve reached my limit, so I chose to discontinue their use…
Over the past five weeks, I haven’t taken any medication and the pain has worsened significantly. Walking is a struggle, particularly in the mornings, and my wrist and finger discomfort remains persistent, if not exacerbated.
I’ve been relying on strong pain relievers to help me push through, and they’ve definitely made a difference in managing the discomfort. However, after each training session, my body seems to fall apart the following day.
He told his followers that he was back in hospital today to try something else, adding: ‘I know a lot of you have recommended the biologics but in order for me to get on to these, I have to have tried at least two different medications first.
As a determined advocate for my health, I’ve recently experimented with methotrexate tablets and injections. Now, I’m embarking on a new journey with sulfasalazine tablets. This path may be lengthy, but I remain optimistic and steadfast in my resolve!
Sulfasalazine is another drug used to treat inflammatory diseases and can lead to nausea.
Adam went on to say, “Here’s the deal: I’ve never known a day without pain! For over two years now, I’ve lived with pain every single day, which, as you might guess, has quite an impact.
The only instances where I’ve experienced discomfort instead of being pain-free have been during my stint on Strictly. For around 4-5 weeks, the pain was so intense that I couldn’t continue physically. In truth, I was enduring a lot of suffering, even though I was trying to appear strong and resilient.
Despite enduring physical discomfort and pain, I found myself mentally determined to persevere. The team suggested steroid injections to alleviate some of the pain slightly, and they proved incredibly effective!
As a lifestyle enthusiast, I’d admit that my dancing skills are yet to impress, but fortunately, the discomfort has subsided. To be truthful, I’ve been yearning for some respite to regain my usual self. And luckily, today has offered just that! Here’s hoping for the best! I understand it’s not a permanent solution, but it provides me with a brief moment until other treatments take effect.
He finished the post with words of motivation, writing: ‘I genuinely do not talk to anyone about any of this, and the reason I share this is because I know a lot of you are suffering, but I want you to know that we have to stay strong!
‘We’re facing challenging times with a mix of ups and downs, but no one else fully grasps our struggle. Still, we must not allow these hardships to overcome us. I stand firm – I won’t surrender!’
Previously, in February, he informed his followers by posting photos from a hospital visit, expressing that he was tired of keeping his struggles private and no longer wished to endure in secrecy.
Unfortunately, it wasn’t an enjoyable read when the celebrity disclosed that the past year and a half had been the most challenging time they’ve experienced yet in their life.
Adam was joined in hospital by his wife of over six-years Caroline Daly.
Initially, in August 2023, he shared that his diagnosis had followed a further eight months of discomfort.
In his latest Instagram post, he expressed that it has significantly impacted him individually as well as affected our entire family.
I simply wanted to express my gratitude to @carolinethomas23 and the children for accompanying me on this trip. I understand that it hasn’t always been easy or smooth, but I hope we’re making progress towards the correct route now!
Although I’m still learning about the situation, I’ve discovered quite a bit about myself in the process. I can confidently say that without this group of people, I would be at a loss!
