Is the Witches’ Road real?: Agatha All Along’s biggest twist, explained
As a long-time Marvel fan, I must admit that “Agatha All Along” has been nothing short of a revelation. This enchanting series, set within the expansive tapestry of the MCU, has managed to captivate audiences with its whimsical charm, comedic flair, and chilling horror elements, making it the ideal spooky season treat.
Expressing that Marvel Television’s Agatha All Along has been exceptionally impressive would be a significant understatement. Since its debut on Disney Plus in September, the show has held the comic book and superhero genres captivated, thanks to its charming style, humorous delivery, and subtle horror elements that make it an ideal choice for spooky season viewing.
Additionally, it belongs to the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and its quality is so impressive that it ranks among the top titles in the Multiverse Saga so far. It presents unexpected turns, challenges with high-stakes consequences that leave you raising your eyebrows, and disclosures that, while some guessed, arrive in ways that are completely unforeseen.
In the fifth episode of the series, it became clear that Teen, whom Agatha Harkness had grown quite fond of and seen as a sweet, innocent boy, was actually Billy Maximoff, better known as Wiccan, the son of Scarlet Witch. It’s worth noting that Agatha has a history with Wanda Maximoff, a relationship that was first explored in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) through the miniseries ‘WandaVision’.
Nevertheless, it remained significant throughout the series, notably during the double-episode season finale where a major plot twist unfolded. Please be advised, the following contains significant spoilers.
Inside Agatha All Along’s Witches’ Road twist
In the second-to-last episode of Agatha All Along, Jennifer Kale, Agatha Harkness, and Billy Maximoff successfully exited the Witches’ Road. This was followed by a dramatic confrontation between Agatha, Billy, and Rio Vidal (also known as Death). In the end, the ancient witch selflessly gave up her life to shield Billy, passing away peacefully in her own backyard. It appeared that the ordeal of the Witches’ Road had finally ended. However, it soon became clear that this was just the beginning.
Upon coming back home, Billy noticed several objects in his room that reminded him of sights he had seen on the Witches’ Path: Autumn leaves similar to those on the path, a poster depicting Lorna Wu’s interpretation of The Ballad of the Witches’ Path, shoes identical to the ones his coven removed at the start of their journey along the Path, and a poster portraying The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, much like the Oz-themed trial they experienced on the Path.
Subsequently, Billy reminisced about the time when Agatha nearly showed astonishment upon learning about The Road’s existence. He pondered if she had ever traversed it before, and remembered her comment that she wasn’t sure he was capable of creating such a path, accompanied by a wink. In that instant, every part of the mystery became clear: The Witches’ Road, as it turned out, was nothing more than Billy’s creation.
When Agatha’s ghost appeared, he discovered that her existence was merely a fictional tale because The Witches’ Road turned out to be a legend. This revelation came from the series finale, which revealed how events unfolded. Agatha and her son, Nicholas Scratch, would sing a ballad called “The Ballad of the Witches’ Road,” and it spread across the land. After her son died, she became vengeful, leading to her transformation into the notorious Agatha Harkness we are familiar with today.
Agatha knew that The Road was Billy’s Hex
Over the course of many years, Agatha would gather groups of witches and lead them in singing the Ballad. When the gate wouldn’t open (as there simply was no gate), she would persuade them all to attack her, a tactic similar to her attempted trickery towards Lilia, Jen, and Alice in episode two. This was part of Agatha’s agreement with Rio/Death; by doing so, she supplied Death with additional bodies/souls to claim throughout the centuries.
Initially, she was set against involving Teen on her journey because the Road didn’t exist yet. Her plan was to utilize the witches she had gathered to confront them and seize their powers, which was why she preferred he wasn’t present for the song performance. However, things took an unexpected turn. A door materialized, and the group embarked on the Road.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but marvel at the fact that Teen / Billy seemingly brought the Witches’ Road into reality, just like his mom, Wanda Maximoff, conjured up Westview in its whimsical, television-esque form. In much the same way as she visualized it, willed it, and needed it to be, he too materialized the Witches’ Road from his thoughts. It was his own unique take on the Hex, demonstrating the extraordinary power of his mind. That’s truly mind-blowing!
What’s truly astonishing is that although the Road wasn’t physically present, Billy managed to bring it to life. The events of the trials were authentic, meaning those who lost their lives during them truly perished, while those who survived and reached the end received their rewards. It may be hard to comprehend, but everything took place as if it were real. The door, the Road, and the trials all seemed tangible, yet they didn’t exist until Billy’s magic was in effect, and they ceased to exist once he closed it off again.
The understanding that Billy played a role in the deaths of Sharon Davis (also known as Mrs. Hart), Alice Wu-Gulliver, and Lilia Calderu will haunt him forever. Much like the complex character of Scarlet Witch, he may find solace in having helped Tommy and beginning to uncover the answers he sought, but the burden of loved ones’ deaths on his conscience will be a constant reminder for him.
All magic comes with a price, and this was his.
