Lionsgate adapting one of the scariest survival horror games ever into a film
As a seasoned horror enthusiast who has survived countless sleepless nights thanks to games like Outlast, I can hardly contain my excitement about the upcoming movie adaptation! With Roy Lee at the helm and J.T. Petty penning the screenplay, this promises to be a terrifying journey into the depths of our collective nightmares.
It has been reported that Until Dawn is being turned into a movie, Blumhouse Productions is developing a film based on Dead by Daylight, and Lionsgate, known for their long-running Saw series, intends to scare a new audience with a movie adaptation of Outlast.
Based on reports, horror movie producer Roy Lee, known for films such as “Barbarian” and this year’s “Late Night with the Devil,” is set to oversee the adaptation process. The original author of “Outlast,” J.T. Petty, will be responsible for writing the screenplay.
Red Barrels has been pushing the limits of horror in games for more than a decade, and expanding the ‘Outlast Universe’ into film is an incredible opportunity to dive deeper into the characters and killers we love.
In a survival horror setting, the game named “Outlast” positions players as a journalist who receives a lead about a spine-chilling mental hospital in Colorado. Upon entering, they discover an utter horror scenario. The creative minds behind Red Barrels are responsible for its development and publication, with its initial release gaining enough popularity to trigger several sequels.
The latest addition to the series is titled “The Outlast Trials“, serving as a prequel to the first two games, delving into the aftermath of Cold War experiments. Like its predecessors, “The Outlast Trials” can be played individually; however, it introduces the option for cooperative play.
As a horror enthusiast who can’t get enough of both movies and games, I’m truly living in the golden age! The much-anticipated film adaptation of “Until Dawn” is finally on its way, slated for release in April 2025. To top it off, Sony just released a remastered version of the game exclusively for PlayStation 5, which I’ve been enjoying immensely this past month!
Speaking of “Dead by Daylight”, it’s worth noting that a movie adaptation is currently in the works, which marks a collaboration between James Wan’s Atomic Monster and Blumhouse. This highly engaging online multiplayer game has amassed a vast player base numbering in millions.
In addition to the upcoming “Outlast” movie, Lionsgate is also set to debut “Saw XI” in September 2025, part of the ongoing “Saw” series. They still have two more films in their revamped “The Strangers” trilogy to release, with a sneak peek for “The Strangers: Chapter Two” recently unveiled.
