As I read through this heartfelt story of Ali Astall, I find myself deeply moved by her courage and resilience in the face of adversity. Having gone through my own battles with breast cancer, I can relate to the shock and fear that comes with such a diagnosis, especially when it happens unexpectedly.

On Wednesday, former Hollyoaks actress Ali Bastian bravely disclosed an update about her cancer struggle via a social media post. She candidly revealed moments when she doesn’t necessarily feel like a warrior in the fight against cancer.

The well-recognized actress, aged 42, famed for her portrayal of Becca Dean in the Channel 4 soap opera between 2001 and 2007, received a diagnosis of stage two breast cancer from physicians in June.

Recently, Ali, who’s undergoing chemotherapy prior to a mastectomy and radiotherapy, revealed the poignant instant when she decided to shave off her hair.

Currently, the celebrity has shared an honest account on Instagram with her 78,800 followers about her personal experience during the course of treatment.

She shared an honest teary-eyed selfie taken in her home, as she dressed in a grey T-shirt with a pink headscarf on her head.

At times, you may not feel as if you possess the fighting spirit others claim for you, and that’s perfectly fine. This journey isn’t always simple.

‘There is cortisol in tears and they are better out than in.’

As the day progressed, her spirits appeared to brighten up when she decided to pass along a humorous Muppets video that her brother-in-law had shared with her.

In another Instagram post, the actor expressed gratitude by saying: “Then your brother-in-law shares this with me. Thanks!” Accompanied by a heart and laughter emoji.

The update comes just after Ali took to Instagram to post a heartbreaking video showing the moment she cut her hair off earlier this month.

Using the tune of “This is Me” from The Greatest Showman, Ali expressed that enduring whatever it takes was a minimal cost compared to the opportunity to regain her health. She also acknowledged that she would undergo a transformation that would last forever.

Using her husband David O’Mahony as her barber, the actress courageously flashed a smile at the camera prior to having her hair shaved off.

Later on, she unveiled her fresh appearance, and in a spontaneous snapshot, she affectionately embraced her youngest child, Isla, who was four years old at the time.

“She noted that every month feels like Breast Cancer Awareness Month for her, since she has breast cancer.

She further explained, “The more immersed I become in my treatment, the more it mirrors the bare and authentic feelings I’m experiencing at this moment. Sharing about this process isn’t about returning to who I was before, but rather moving forward towards my future, embracing who I am today, truthfully.

She expressed: ‘To all brave female warriors dealing with this, remember you’re never on your own. #breastcancerawareness’

“Ali, you’re simply fantastic! Wishing you an abundance of love and power, my dear friend.

‘You are so beautiful So brave and a truly amazing human! Sending you so much love’.

‘Sending you much love xxxxxx all my prayers are with you’ and’ ‘Thinking of you Ali’.

In addition to the well-known figure, supporters, individuals surviving their own courageous fights, and others, expressed messages of encouragement:

1) “You’re so stunningly beautiful, Ali, whether with or without.

‘love to you Ali ❤️ brave and beautiful xxx’

I admire you, Ali. You demonstrate so much resilience during difficult times! My thoughts are with you and I’m sending you plenty of love. Can’t wait to talk again soon, XX

Ali, currently residing in Ireland with her spouse and two little girls, shared with OK! Magazine her diagnosis news. In her own words, “It came as a complete surprise. There are mornings when I wake up and I can’t recall… then suddenly I remember. I’m still struggling to come to terms with it.

While nursing their 19-month-old daughter, Isabella (their youngest child with David O’Mahony), Ali discovered a lump.

The mother-of-two – who also raises Isla, four, with her husband – shared: ‘I hadn’t been breastfeeding Izzy at night but then David flew back to London for work and suddenly she was feeding like crazy. I was thinking, ‘Maybe she’s having a growth spurt or something.’

Consequently, I experienced tenderness in my breasts. Upon waking the following day, I found myself saying, “That’s painful indeed.” It was at this point that I detected a lump.

Ali believed she had a ‘clogged milk duct’, and her doctor prescribed antibiotics, but it didn’t improve, so, following her physician’s recommendation, she visited a specialized breast clinic instead.

She continued: ‘It was a bank holiday in Ireland, so I went straight to the emergency doctor.

It appeared as though I was experiencing mastitis, given that I had just started night-weaning Izzy prior to this. We believed it might be a case of a milk duct becoming clogged.

The physician prescribed antibiotics for me, mentioning that if the condition didn’t improve within a few days, I should visit the specialized breast clinic instead.

However, it didn’t seem like things were getting any better, and the more I examined it, the stronger my conviction became that this might not be a simple blocked duct after all.

I visited my general practitioner and asked, “Could I go to the clinic today?” She was quite supportive of my request.

Ali learned some surprising, troubling information over the phone, but felt comforted when informed that there was a strong intention to heal her.

She’s preparing for a surgical removal of one breast, and she’s yet to learn if it would be beneficial to remove both breasts as a precautionary step.
