Shrinking season 2 episode 4 explores difficult family dynamics (Recap and review)
As a devoted fan of Shrinking, I must say that episode 4 of season 2 had me hooked from start to finish! The focus on Sean’s story was both captivating and heart-wrenching, shedding light on the complexities of his relationship with his father. It’s a rollercoaster of emotions, and I found myself rooting for Sean every step of the way.
In the fourth episode of season 2 titled “Made You Look” on the Apple TV+ series Shrinking, the narrative primarily delved into Sean’s tale, offering an engaging exploration. I found myself drawn back into his thoughts and motivations, making for a fascinating watch. If you’re eager to join me in discussing this intriguing episode, let’s dive right into our recap and review! SPOILERS AHEAD.
It appears that Sean and Liz are swiftly reconciling their relationship. Jimmy suggested Sean take Liz to one of his therapy sessions with Paul, which he did, resulting in both parties apologizing for their mistakes. However, it’s unfortunate that their partnership is ending so soon. It’s only just begun! But for now, Sean plans to continue working with his father. I’m not convinced that’s the best choice.
It takes some time before Sean feels comfortable discussing why his father is so troublesome, but eventually opens up to Jimmy following an incident that seemed to push him towards relapsing and engaging in a physical altercation with construction workers. Poor Sean, he had been making substantial strides, and I fear his dad’s negative attitude might undo all the progress made. He discloses that upon returning from Afghanistan, Sean was battling to find purpose, and instead of offering support when asked, his father dismissed his pleas for help.
His father thought the tough love act would work and that Sean would get over his PTSD. Yikes. Father of the year over here. Of course that wasn’t the case and that’s when Sean started fighting, which lead to him being kicked out of the house. It’s clear Sean has such complicated feelings towards his dad, yelling at Jimmy for trying to talk bad about him. There’s lots of feelings that need to be sorted out here. There’s a cliffhanger of sorts where we see Sean’s dad watching his son and Jimmy laughing and entering the house. Hmm.
Concerning the strained relationships within Gaby’s family, I’m curious about the tension that exists between her, her sister, and their mother. It seems that Gaby tends to keep a distance from both her sister and mom, often choosing not to engage in conversation. Interestingly, despite her mother having been involved in a car accident, Gaby appears less concerned due to her belief that her sister wouldn’t have ended the call so abruptly if the situation were more severe. As we delve deeper into understanding Sean’s complex family issues, I eagerly anticipate exploring the same with Gaby.
On a brighter side, in the photo we have Derek2, portrayed by Damon Wayans Jr. Derek, Liz’s husband, presents his work-time buddy, another Derek, to the group, particularly Gaby, who affectionately refers to him as Derek2. The two seem to be getting along splendidly, and I’m hopeful that this is a fine individual entering Gaby’s life. I find their companionship appealing! Here’s to hoping they indeed establish a relationship and it flourishes.
In the fourth episode of season 2 in Shrinking, Brian’s narrative takes an unexpected turn. Despite his long-held belief that he doesn’t want children and his husband Charlie expressing acceptance, Brian secretly yearns for kids. This episode follows Brian as he grapples with the possibility of this change and his friends, particularly Liz, attempting to persuade him of its benefits. Additionally, Brian decides to adopt a dog during this period.
I feel like something like this is such a huge decision, especially for people who initially don’t want kids. I think it was resolved a bit too quickly. I could see and understand why Brian changed his mind. But it would have been more realistic I think if this played out in a number of episodes instead of just one. One reason Brian is so nervous is because he thinks he’s selfish and self-centered. But Jimmy reminds him he has so much empathy for those around him.
In the episode, we witnessed this selfless act when he aided Grace without expecting payment, and he was instrumental in persuading her to leave her unfaithful spouse, divorce him, and move to Vancouver with her sister. At the climax of the episode, empathy surfaced as the drunk driver returned Alice’s lost wallet at the coffee shop. He inquired about their well-being, to which Brian responded that they were improving. However, when he asked the same question of the drunk driver, it was evident he was not okay, and Brian followed him. Oh, I’m curious to see how Jimmy and Alice will respond to this situation!
In another part of the show, Alice and Conner shared a night together which could potentially harm Alice’s relationship with Summer. Moreover, Conner seems unable to hide his feelings about this secret, and it looks like he’ll spill the beans soon. Additionally, Paul has come to believe that collaborating with Jimmy on Sean’s case would be beneficial for the patient they both value.
In summary, “Shrinking” season 2 episode 4 was another skillfully crafted episode that I found quite engaging. This season seems to offer more intricate storylines for the other characters, which I appreciate. While I feel that season 1 effectively explored Jimmy’s emergence from grief and Paul’s Parkinson’s, it’s great to see more focus being given to all the characters now, delving deeper into their lives. This is exactly what I had hoped for! Episode rating: B.
