Formula 1 championship battle overshadowing potential 2025 threat

As a long-time Formula 1 enthusiast who has witnessed countless seasons and drivers come and go, I must say, Charles Leclerc’s 2024 campaign has been nothing short of remarkable. The Monegasque driver has been the unsung hero of this season, consistently challenging the favorites and demonstrating a level of skill that warrants recognition beyond mere accolades.

2023 had been an exceptional year for Max Verstappen, with numerous Formula 1 records being shattered by him. As the favorite once more in 2024, he started off the season promisingly. However, McLaren’s progress has remained impressive this season, with Lando Norris emerging as a potential world champion contender and steadily narrowing the points difference between himself and Verstappen.

Amidst all the buzz and focus on those two racers, Charles Leclerc from Monaco has had an outstanding season that’s gone relatively unnoticed, and yet he hasn’t received as much praise as he should have. His performance this year significantly outshines his past seasons, a fact that warrants acknowledgment.

Initially, Leclerc was the frontrunner for the 2022 championship title due to his success in the first three races, where he claimed two victories. Yet, his inconsistency, questionable strategies, and struggles with car control at Ferrari allowed Verstappen to gain an edge.

But Leclerc has quietly become a championship caliber driver.

When the Monaco-born racer joined Formula 1, there was widespread belief that his skill set marked him as a potential world champion.

As a gamer, I’ve got to admit, keeping up with Leclerc’s performance this season feels like cruising through levels on easy mode. This 27-year-old racer has barely missed a beat, managing to place in the top five almost every time he hits the track, except for three races. But here’s where it gets really impressive – he’s even managed to rack up three wins this year, which matches his personal best for a single season. Impressive stuff!

Leclerc has addressed his primary issue that kept him from claiming a title – inconsistency. Over the past two-and-a-half seasons, there have been some questionable mistakes from him, the most memorable being the crash during the formation lap in Brazil last year.

Under the leadership of team principal Fred Vasseur, the SF-24 has significantly improved and is now widely considered one of the best cars on the racetrack. In the last five races, Ferrari has claimed victory in three of them. Charles Leclerc has been the highest scorer in Formula 1 during this period. It’s anticipated that they will maintain this success even when Lewis Hamilton joins the team in 2025.

Leclerc is well-positioned to vie for the 2025 championship due to Ferrari’s advancements and the difficulties that Red Bull and McLaren are currently experiencing. Maintaining this degree of reliability next season could make him a strong contender for the world champion title, but his new teammate might be the only obstacle in his path to the crown.
