Sydney Sweeney goes makeup-free playing boxer Christy Martin on set of hotly-anticipated biopic
As I delve into Christy Martin’s extraordinary life story, I am awestruck by her indomitable spirit and resilience. Her journey from a boxing sensation to a survivor of domestic abuse and eventual triumph is nothing short of inspiring. The way she has transformed her pain into purpose, becoming a beacon of hope for countless others, is truly commendable.
On Tuesday, in Gastonia, North Carolina, Sydney Sweeney underwent a remarkable makeover while filming, assuming the role of the renowned boxer Christy Martin for an upcoming biography.
As an ardent admirer, let me share my awe: The 27-year-old star from Anyone But You, who just foiled a burglary while filming, astonishingly ditched her glamorous persona for a rugged, athletic vibe reminiscent of the ’90s.
In an unexpected twist, I opted to trade my customary glamorous red-carpet attire for a loose athletic outfit this time. I wore a brunette wig, a vibrant pink tank top, and dark shorts, embodying Martin’s early boxing essence.
She put on a pair of pink sneakers, slung a backpack over her shoulder, symbolizing the resilient spirit of a woman who, many years prior, endured a vicious assault by her husband, miraculously surviving an attempt on her life.
After Sweeney, a former teenage combat sports enthusiast, mentioned it, she revealed that the movie provides an excellent opportunity for her to reignite her love for the boxing ring.
From the age of 12 to 19, I was deeply involved in kickboxing. Lately, I’ve been eager to return to the ring, resume training, and reshape my physique. This is what Sweeney shared with Deadline not long ago.
Christy’s tale is not an easy one to navigate; it requires both physical and emotional effort… Yet, I thrive on taking on challenges.
I find myself drawn to share a tale of a remarkable woman who endured immense hardships without letting them conquer her spirit. The narrative is moving and impactful.
The movie, orchestrated by David Michod, chronicles the ascendancy of Martin to stardom during the 1990s, becoming the foremost female boxer in America.
Sweeney signed on to play Christy Martin back in May, with Michod (Animal Kingdom) directing from a script he co-wrote with Mirrah Foulkes.
In the production, you’ll find Ben Foster portraying Martin’s spouse, James, alongside Merritt Weaver, Ethan Embry, and Katy O’Brien.
56-year-old Martin, affectionately known as “The Coal Miner’s Daughter,” originates from West Virginia. She has earned acclaim for her significant role in elevating women’s boxing to prominence.
In 1996, her legendary showdown with Deirdre Gogarty at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas drew a crowd that was left spellbound, securing her a lasting reputation in the annals of boxing lore.
Martin’s achievements resulted in him gracing the covers of prominent sports magazines, making guest appearances on popular talk programs, and even snagging roles in well-known American television comedies.
Yet, away from the limelight, her life was far from the picture of success.
For 20 years, she endured abuse from her husband and trainer, James ‘Jim’ Martin.
On a chilling day of November 23, 2010, an appalling incident took place when Jim brutally attacked Christy at their residence after a heated argument. He inflicted numerous stab wounds and fired one shot into her abdomen, seemingly intending to take her life. Incredibly, against all odds, Christy miraculously survived.
Back in June 2012, Jim received a 25-year prison term due to his conviction of attempted second-degree murder and manslaughter.
Currently, Christy is rediscovering her passion in the role of a boxing promoter, and she tied the knot with her previous opponent in the ring, Lisa Holewyne, back in 2017.
Her journey as a boxer and survivor has transformed her into an enduring symbol of resilience.
In 2016, she was the pioneer to be enshrined in the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame, followed by her induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020. She concluded her impressive boxing career with a record of 49 wins, 7 losses, and 3 draws.
Currently in production, the release date for the film remains unannounced.
