Here’s one thing you’ll never see in a Terrifier movie according to Damien Leone
As a long-time fan of horror films, I must admit that the Terrifier series has been a rollercoaster ride of blood, gore, and pure terror. The latest installment, Terrifier 3, is no exception, pushing the boundaries of what’s acceptable in a slasher movie while still managing to maintain a certain level of artistic integrity.
Art the Clown is currently sending shivers down spines nationwide with “Terrifier 3” now screening in cinemas (and raking in profits as it does). However, despite the heavy doses of violence and gore found throughout the trilogy directed by Damien Leone, there are certain boundaries he refuses to breach.
Mild spoilers ahead for Terrifier 3
During a conversation with Variety, Leone shared the boundary he doesn’t wish to cross – the sensitive topic of harming or taking the lives of children.
Hang on a minute! I thought Art was the one who killed children in Terrifier 3, right? While it’s true that the clown did take lives in the third film, all of these fatalities occurred off-camera.
In this movie, the opening scene shows me mercilessly slaughtering an entire family, and tragically, one of them was a young boy. Although it’s not shown explicitly, we can only imagine the horror due to the sounds. Later on, I plant explosives that appear as presents at a Santa meet-and-greet in a mall. Sadly, when they detonate, innocent children are among the victims.
In both instances, these events surpassed the boundary of acceptability for certain spectators. However, Leone maintains that such graphic depictions as seen in the shower scene, for instance, would never be displayed in their entirety in his work.
Although he’s open to exploring unconventional paths and even venturing where others wouldn’t dare, there are still certain boundaries he won’t transgress.
You can absolutely fall into a level of extreme distaste that I’m trying not to do.
In their current form, the “Terrifier” films are designed to challenge or even turn off some viewers due to their intense graphic violence and continuous attempts to surpass their predecessors. However, director Damien Leone acknowledges that there’s a balance to maintain, as certain elements might become too alienating for many. This is an issue that numerous horror filmmakers encounter at some point in their careers.
It’s like you’re trying to shock the audience so much it just becomes desperate. I think it’s my job as an artist to try and walk that line in a more interesting way, in a more responsible way.
Absolutely, there’s definitely going to be more of “Terrifier” for you. The franchise has already confirmed a fourth movie, titled “Terrifier 4”. According to the director, this film will serve as an epic ending to the Art the Clown saga, hinting that it might be the last one in the series. However, he also mentioned in another interview with Discussing Film that there could potentially be two more movies after this. But who knows, maybe the “Terrifier” series has more tricks up its sleeve!
