Kanye West and Adidas settle explosive legal dispute 2 years after brand cut ties over his anti-Semitism
As someone who has spent decades observing the music industry and its complexities, I find myself both surprised yet not entirely shocked by the recent settlement between Kanye West and Adidas. The rapper’s controversial comments have been a recurring theme in his public life, but it was the anti-Semitic remarks that ultimately led to this legal dispute.
After a period of two years, the legal disagreement between Kanye West and Adidas has been resolved – following Adidas’ decision to terminate its collaboration with the musician due to his controversial anti-Semitic remarks.
In October 2022, West’s yearly contract worth $220 million with the German company, amounting to a total of $1.5 billion, was ended following the musician’s continuous offensive comments, such as a social media post threatening “death-con 3” against Jewish people using the X symbol.
On Tuesday, Adidas revealed they had settled their case with Kanye West outside of court, bringing a conclusion to all legal matters involving them. They emphasized that no monetary exchange was part of the agreement.
Adidas and West had been embroiled in multiple lawsuits for the past two years.
Bjorn Gulden stated that all outstanding matters have been resolved, and there will be no further financial transactions between us, allowing us to proceed separately.
In numerous areas, disagreements arose, and when each party positioned their arguments on opposite sides, they realized that fighting was no longer necessary. Consequently, they chose to withdraw all their claims.
Cutting ties with West resulted in him no longer being a billionaire, and this decision was one of several high-profile endorsements he lost following his controversial statements.
The collaboration started back in 2013, following an agreement with Nike, initially envisioned as a decade-long project.
Prior to their separation, Kanye West was already engaging in public disputes with Adidas officials, alleging that they were taking his creative concepts without proper credit.
West owns the Yeezy brand but Adidas pay him an annual royalty fee to sell the products.
Under mounting scrutiny due to their founder Adi Dassler’s affiliation with the Nazi Party, Adidas faced growing calls to terminate their partnership with Kanye West following a series of controversial and anti-Semitic remarks he made.
In their declaration, Adidas asserts that they have zero tolerance for antisemitism, along with any form of hateful language or expressions.
‘Ye’s recent comments and actions have been unacceptable, hateful and dangerous, and they violate the company’s values of diversity and inclusion, mutual respect and fairness.’
The company warned that severing ties with the rapper could potentially reduce their net income by as much as 250 million euros in 2022.
In February 2024 West slammed Adidas for releasing new ‘fake’ Yeezys without his consent,
West implied that Adidas was unfairly exploiting Kanye West (his favorite artist), by continuing to sell YEEZY items using leftover stock from 2022, as if the brand were attempting an unjustified takeover of his work.
As a die-hard fan, I’m utterly flabbergasted to confess that I’ve been left reeling by a shocking revelation! The artist himself has cried foul, asserting that the sneakers peddled under his label by this renowned brand – Adidas – are nothing more than counterfeits. Incredulously, they’re reportedly planning to drag him to court over it, demanding a whopping 250 million dollars in damages!
In an angry Instagram post, West claimed that not only are they releasing false color schemes, but they are also pursuing a $250 million lawsuit against him and failing to pay him for shoes carrying his name.
“They are exploiting legal agreements and decades of industry knowledge to unfairly take advantage of one of your beloved artists, doing so openly and publicly.” This version maintains the original’s sentiment while using more professional language.
Additionally, he posted about the Adidas Yeezy sneakers, stating: “Anyone who is a fan of Kanye West wouldn’t settle for fake Yeezys.
‘I never made these color ways I’m not getting paid off of them and adidas is suing me All these celebrities and the public will stand against a T shirt or the color of my hat but when yall see me have my children hidden from me or see an actual Fortune 500 company rape one of your heroes in real life don’t nobody say nothing or do nothing.
With regards to this system, it seems like there’s a situation at hand. You might be wondering what will happen next. Will they take down my album once more? Restrict my accounts again? Threaten others not to collaborate with me? Even go as far as discrediting the new, unapproved Yeezys? That sounds fishy to me.
DailyMail.com contacted representatives for Adidas for comment.
Adidas contributed funds to the Anti-Defamation League and the Philonise & Keeta Floyd Institute for Social Change, an organization led by Philonise Floyd, the brother of George Floyd who is known for advocating social justice.
Purchased directly from Adidas in North America, these shoes bear blue square pins as a symbol of unity against anti-Semitism, an initiative supported by the Robert Kraft Foundation for Combating Antisemitism.
As a dedicated advocate for inclusivity and understanding, I’m proud to be affiliated with a company that not only supports its customers through sales but also extends a helping hand to organizations combating antisemitism and other forms of hatred. This commitment to social justice is at the heart of our mission, and it’s a privilege to be part of such a compassionate team.
