As a longtime fan of Formula One racing, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming Netflix miniseries “Senna.” Having followed the career of Ayrton Senna since his karting days, I’ve been eagerly waiting for a series that truly captures the essence of this legendary driver. The exclusive trailer alone has me on the edge of my seat!
Five years following the debut of its hit Formula One documentary series “Drive to Survive,” Netflix delves into the past of auto racing’s foremost title for its first scripted endeavor centered around the sport, focusing on the life of one of its legendary figures: Ayrton Senna.
The series titled “Senna,” premiering on Nov 29th, chronicles the life of the charismatic Brazilian, Senna, from his early days in karting in São Paulo to his untimely death at age 34 following a crash during the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix. The intriguing trailer below offers a sneak peek into this six-part miniseries featuring Gabriel Leone (“Ferrari”) as Senna. The show primarily focuses on the exhilarating highlights of Senna’s 10 years in Formula One, delving deep into his fierce rivalry with teammate Alain Prost, his exceptional racing abilities in wet conditions, and his achievement of three World Drivers’ Championships.
Beyond the thrill of on-track competition appealing to dedicated car enthusiasts, this series, spearheaded by showrunner Vicente Amorim, also delves into Senna’s personal life. We meet his supportive parents, Miltão (portrayed by Marco Ricca) and Zaza (Susana Ribeiro); his glamorous pop star girlfriend, Xuxa (played by Pâmela Tomé); and Laura Harrison (Kaya Scodelario), a fictional journalist who forms a close bond with the driver upon his relocation to Europe.
While “Drive to Survive” and the introduction of three Grand Prix races within the U.S. have certainly boosted Formula One’s popularity among American viewers, it’s important to note that the sport is still far more influential on a global scale, similar to soccer. Given this, the Brazilian-produced film “Senna,” predominantly in Portuguese and backed by F1’s governing body, appears poised to strengthen the connection between Netflix and dedicated Formula One fans who are already familiar with Senna and his achievements.
The driver was previously the subject of Asif Kapadia’s 2011 documentary “Senna.”
