Only Murders in the Building season 5 is happening (and here's everything we know so far!)

As a die-hard fan of Only Murders in the Building, I couldn’t contain my excitement when I heard the news about the show getting renewed for a fifth season! With three seasons already under my belt and the fourth one just wrapping up, I can confidently say that this show has become a staple in my weekly viewing schedule.

Despite uncertainty about additional seasons of “Only Murders in the Building” that Hulu may be planning, we can confirm it will return for another installment as it has been nominated for an Emmy!

Indeed, it’s confirmed! The popular series “Only Murders in the Building” has been renewed for a fifth season by Hulu, just a week after the launch of season 4 in late August 2024. Given how season 4 concluded, we can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that another installment is on its way, and we won’t have to wait long to learn about its continuation.

Instead, we just will have to wait for the next season to arrive on Hulu but the good news is that we already know a bit about what to expect from the fifth season of Only Murders in the Building.

Only Murders in the Building season 5 is happening and will be 10 episodes

Fans can feel assured that the fifth season of “Only Murders in the Building” is indeed on its way, as it was officially renewed on September 4, 2024. In making this announcement, Hulu further revealed that the upcoming season will comprise ten episodes – a fact that comes as no surprise to many.

The entire four-season run of the show has featured ten episodes each, a structure that seems to work remarkably well for this particular series. Ten-episode seasons give the writers ample opportunity to craft engaging narratives that develop throughout the season, creating a harmonious balance for the show.

The abbreviated seasons have played a significant role in enabling the series to launch a new season annually since its debut in 2021, making it an uncommon achievement for a streaming original in our contemporary era.

Season 5 of Only Murders should be coming in 2025

It’s anticipated that the fifth season of “Only Murders in the Building” may premiere in 2025, as it’s been customary for the show to release a new season annually, with minimal extended breaks.

Typically, Hulu has introduced new seasons of “Only Murders in the Building” during the summer months. With three out of the show’s four seasons having been premiered in August, it is anticipated that season 5 will likely drop around August 2025.

If Hulu tends to launch new seasons like season 5 around the same time of year as season 4 (end of August), then there’s a chance we might see the premiere on Tuesday, August 26, 2025.

The Only Murders cast should feature new and returning favorites

Without a doubt, “Only Murders in the Building” wouldn’t be the same without its main trio consisting of Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez. Fortunately, we can look forward to their return for the series’ fifth season. As for the rest of the cast, it seems that things are a bit more up in the air at this point.

As we approach season 5, it’s anticipated that many significant characters will reappear in some form next year. This includes Michael Cyril Creighton portraying Howard, a character who has been a constant presence on the show since its debut, and Teddy Coluca as Lester, the doorman of the Arconia.

In Season 5, Tea Leoni will join the cast after appearing in the season 4 finale as Sofia Caccimelio. She is a mysterious woman who shows up at the Arconia to enlist the help of the Only Murders team in locating her late husband, Nicky, who is believed to be deceased.

In future seasons, there’s a possibility that some of our show’s fantastic guest stars could make an appearance again, perhaps for a brief return. This includes Meryl Streep as Loretta, Melissa McCarthy as Doreen, Amy Ryan as Jan Bellows, Molly Shannon as Bev Melon, Richard Kind as Vince Fish, Kumail Ali Nanjiani as Rudy Thurber, and possibly even Eva Longoria, Zach Galifianakis, and Eugene Levy in season 5.

Warning spoilers ahead from the season 4 finale!

What will Only Murders in the Building season 5 be about?

Though the specific storyline for season 5 is still undecided, the season 4 finale has laid the groundwork for the central enigmas of season 5 by introducing a puzzling new character and another murder within the building.

As a dedicated fan, I’m excitedly speculating that the heart of Season 5 might revolve around Charles, Oliver, and Mabel as they tirelessly pursue the truth behind Lester’s murder, a case that seems destined to serve as the season’s main mystery. Moreover, it looks promising that our beloved Only Murders team could collaborate with Sofia Caccimelio in her quest to uncover what happened to her missing husband, Nicky.

So far, our knowledge about the Caccimelios is limited, but it’s clear that Nicky has been presumed dead and seems to have some sort of significant tie with the Arconia. The police haven’t provided much assistance in this matter, leading us to believe that Sofia might be someone who others can’t refuse, which may explain why we anticipate the Only Murders team will eventually take on the case.

In the show “Only Murders in the Building,” it seems likely that the two narratives will eventually merge, leading us to speculate that Lester’s demise might have something to do with the Caccimelio family.
