As a longtime fan of superhero shows and someone who grew up with Superman as a staple of my childhood, I have to say that this week’s episode of Superman and Lois was nothing short of thrilling! The writers did an excellent job of keeping me on the edge of my seat, especially when it came to Lex Luthor.

In simple terms, we’re nearly at the midpoint of Superman & Lois‘s season 4. This beloved CW show has recently come back for its fourth and last season, following a break of more than a year. It’s been catching up rapidly, delivering some truly remarkable episodes right from the start.

Absolutely! The fourth series has been an emotional journey, featuring the demise of Superman, Lex Luthor’s appearance in Smallville, Doomsday’s rule, and another cherished character’s death. It’s been a heavy load for the Kent-Lane family, as well as their close friends, who keep making appearances in guest and recurring roles despite this season’s cast alterations.

In the fifth episode of the season, feelings remained intense. “Break The Cycle” delves into Lex Luthor’s life, exploring the events that led him to seek such severe retribution against the Kent family. There’s a palpable sense of urgency as well, since Luthor has discovered Superman is alive, forcing Lois Lane and her kin to devise a plan to prevent him from resurrecting Doomsday once more.

Old Wounds

The story “Break The Cycle” commences with a look back at the dissolution of Lex’s marriage, triggered by his wife announcing a divorce due to his lack of emotional connection with both her and their daughter, Elizabeth. At first, Lex dismisses these claims, but later admits that his estrangement stemmed from the abuse he suffered at the hands of his mother after his father abandoned them. Despite this, he is prepared to relinquish all assets in the divorce settlement, provided Elizabeth remains in Metropolis. However, Mrs. Luthor initially refuses this condition until Elizabeth herself expresses a desire to stay as well.

Currently, Lex is persistently looking for his estranged daughter, yet he’s not immune to being sidetracked. To clarify, being “sidetracked” means that he has found out Superman is still alive, which led him to revisit Smallville with the intention of confronting him. In response, Superman chooses to intercept Lex and attempts to soften his stance by offering an apology.

As predicted, things aren’t going great for Clark with Lex warning him to make the most of his remaining time since Doomsday will return for him. Meanwhile, Lois comes up with a different plan and discovers where Elizabeth is located in France. She pays her a visit to seek assistance. portraying Elizabeth on Agents of SHIELD, Elizabeth Henstridge, is pregnant and hesitant about getting involved due to the potential danger from Lex, but eventually consents.

Lex’s goons discover that Lois visited her in France and when he goes to confront her at the Smallville gazette, Lois surprises him with Elizabeth herself. The father and daughter have coffee in a bid to reconnect and even though it’s not particularly a warm reunion, there are glimmers of hope there. That is, until Lex refuses to take any responsibility for the fact that he’s a murderer and continues to blame Lois for locking him up on the technicality that he didn’t commit that crime.

Initially, Elizabeth steps back, but a typical Clark Kent motivational speech makes her reconsider. She realizes that she can’t let go of the fact that Lex is still her father, no matter his worthiness. So, she gives him another chance, and it seems they might have found some understanding. But as soon as she suggests he must decide between being a father to her or pursuing revenge on Lois Lane, Lex falls back into old habits, insisting on retribution (I’m not sure about Lex, isn’t seeking vengege against his wife, father, and turning their children against each other excessive enough already?).

Lois realizes that Lex’s heart won’t transform on its own, so she decides to appeal to a different entity: Doomsday. Since the Reverse Flashback Superman still resides within him, she appeals to his reason and calls upon him using her father’s ELT device. She reminds him of his loved ones and pleads with him not to devastate hers. To her surprise, this tactic succeeds.

As I step back into Bruno Mannheim’s gritty subway station-turned-dungeon, my heart skips a beat – where in the world is Doomsday? The air hangs heavy with tension, but there’s not a sign of him. I can’t help but feel a strange sense of relief tinged with apprehension. Where could he have gone? I’ve got to find out…

The price of being a Superboy

In the side plot of “Break The Cycle”, the storyline revolved around brothers Jonathan and Jordan Kent as they prepared to say goodbye to their friends for a July 4th party. While Jordan, temporarily giving up his superhero duties, was enjoying himself, Jonathan wasn’t as he found himself taking on the main role as Superboy in the family, which meant his days of living a typical teenage life were behind him.

Jordan’s girlfriend, Candace, dropped by, but he had to accompany Lois to France to see Elizabeth Luthor. Since Jordan had to tell Candace the honest truth several times, he made up intricate tales about Jonathan conducting interviews for a newspaper with his mother. However, these stories were clearly not true as Candace was aware of that.

In response to her threat to end their relationship due to his lies, Jordan opted to confess everything truthfully (out of sight). This unexpected honesty transformed her perspective completely.

In this thrilling episode, one of our friends, Denise, shared a mind-blowing secret with us – she was among those who witnessed Dad’s incredible battle against Doomsday as a resident. This revelation left us speechless, despite her assurance that she wouldn’t spill the beans to anyone else. Strangely enough, it seemed to put Jordan in a situation where he felt compelled to tell Candace the truth, hoping it would salvage his relationship with Jonathan. Brothers like him are truly heroes!

Doomsday is off the board… for now

At the end of the episode, Lois Lane managed to persuade Doomsday to spare Superman, an unexpected turn of events (a sentence I would have never imagined writing). By summoning the creature with Sam’s ELT and reminding him of his identity as Bizarro Superman – a being who had a wife, children, and a life on the Inverse World – Lois appealed to his sense of family. She implored him not to harm her own family, and surprisingly, Doomsday complied, flying away with Lex left behind.

In the end, Lois Lane, Clark Kent, and their entire family have managed to secure a triumph against Lex Luthor. This cunning antagonist has been tirelessly waging war on Lois’ family since his arrival in Smallville, causing harm such as killing Superman, Sam Lane, and even trying to sow discord between her sons regarding favoritism. However, Doomsday posed the greatest danger, making this victory all the more significant.

Relieving Doomsday’s threat (temporarily) offers the heroes some relief. It’s only a matter of time before Lex resurfaces, hatching yet another wicked plan to seek further revenge. Fortunately, the Kents get a much-needed break from the turmoil Luthor has inflicted on their lives for the past couple of months. This episode was particularly satisfying due to the intense fury etched on his face in the final scenes.

What devious schemes might he concoct next? It’s hard to say, but Superman and Lois Lane are well-prepared for whatever comes their way.
