Adapting popular cartoons and toy lines into live-action movies is often tricky, but Transformers stands out as a success story. G.I. Joe, however, hasn’t found its footing despite multiple big-budget tries. There’s still potential in this area, though, and another classic franchise, Masters of the Universe, is making a comeback. The new trailer might just win over skeptics and thrill fans who have been waiting for a good adaptation.
Before the first trailer came out, many people worried that the Masters of the Universe movie wouldn’t capture the spirit of the original series. The franchise is famous for its bright colors and fun, over-the-top style, and it seemed like that might not translate well to a live-action film. However, the trailer quickly showed how much the filmmakers understood and respected the source material, with details like He-Man’s costume and Skeletor’s intimidating look. And it appears the trailer only hinted at everything the movie has to offer.
The official trailer for the new Masters of the Universe movie is out now, and it will be in theaters on June 5th. The trailer introduces Nicholas Galitzine as He-Man, starting as a regular office worker before discovering his true identity and powers. Soon, the action shifts to the magical world of Eternia, filled with beloved characters from the franchise. We see He-Man wielding the Power Sword, battling armies, and finally facing off against Skeletor (played by Jared Leto), with his voice being revealed for the first time. The newest trailer for Masters of the Universe follows the release of promotional images last week that showed off important characters in the upcoming reboot. We now know who’s playing key roles, including Morena Baccarin as Sorceress, James Wilkinson as Mekaneck, and Jon Xue Zhang as Ram Man. The trailer makes it clear that Masters of the Universe isn’t trying to move away from the colorful, cartoon-like style of the original series. While updated for a live-action movie, the film appears to be a fun and faithful adaptation of the beloved cartoon and toy line.
Look, it’s still early days, but the people making the new Masters of the Universe movie clearly aren’t taking it as a joke. Director Travis Knight has said they’re leaning into the fun, slightly ridiculous side of the original, but also trying to make it all fit together for today’s audiences. He did a great job with Bumblebee – balancing that ’80s feel with what we expect from a movie now – and I’m really hoping he can finally give Masters of the Universe the awesome big-screen treatment it’s always deserved. I’m cautiously optimistic!
