With Cillian Murphy back for the new film, 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, it’s a great time to remember his earlier work with writer Alex Garland and director Danny Boyle while we eagerly await the third installment.
The 2007 sci-fi thriller Sunshine tells the story of a team of astronauts on a perilous mission to save the sun, which is fading. The film stars Cillian Murphy and features a talented cast including Chris Evans (before his Marvel fame), Rose Byrne, Michelle Yeoh, and Hiroyuki Sanada.
When it first came out, opinions were mixed. However, it currently has a respectable 77% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with the Toronto Star describing it as captivating and The Hollywood Reporter calling it exceptional.

Danny Boyle wasn’t involved in directing 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple. Instead, Nia DaCosta directed the film and included a cameo appearance by Jim (the character from the original 28 Days Later), reintroduced in a quiet scene. It shows Jim teaching his daughter, Sam, history when they notice Spike and Jimmy Ink needing assistance.
She explained to EW that she wanted the setting to feel cozy and home-like, mirroring the story’s focus on everyday life. The story features a father making breakfast and teaching his daughter, and they live in a small cottage in the Lake District after a disaster.
This movie isn’t your typical blockbuster franchise film, and I wanted to keep it that way. I deliberately avoided the cliché of a grand, heroic entrance – no sweeping shots of a hero riding in to save the day.
