Does Venom: The Last Dance connect with other Marvel movies?

As a seasoned gamer and Marvel enthusiast who has spent countless hours navigating the vast multiverse of comic books and movies, I can’t help but feel a tad disappointed with Venom: The Last Dance. After the intriguing cliffhangers set by both Let There Be Carnage and Spider-Man: No Way Home, I was eagerly anticipating some mind-blowing crossover moments in this installment.

Six years ago, when Venom graced the big screen for the first time, I, as a Marvel fan, couldn’t help but wonder about the connections this anti-hero might have with other sub-franchises or characters, particularly Spider-Man, given their long-standing rivalry. As the inaugural film in Sony’s reimagined Marvel universe, the original Venom established itself as a solo act, clearly distinguishing itself from the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As “Venom: Let There Be Carnage” neared its completion, the Marvel universe was already bustling with activity. The film’s finale saw Venom traveling to the same universe as Spider-Man (Peter Parker) from the MCU, with Eddie Brock catching a glimpse of J. Jonah Jameson revealing Spider-Man’s identity on TV – a cliffhanger reminiscent of “Spider-Man: Far From Home”, which ended with a similar revelation several years ago. The clever timing of “Let There Be Carnage”‘s release was strategically positioned before “Spider-Man: No Way Home”.

In the movie “No Way Home,” numerous characters from different Spider-Man universes were drawn into Peter’s reality. It seemed that Eddie Brock was among them due to Venom’s collective consciousness having some familiarity with Spider-Man. However, when Doctor Strange undid the spell in the climax of “No Way Home,” Eddie Brock was returned to his own universe.

In “Venom: The Last Dance,” we find that Eddie’s initial scenes offer some additional insights into the storyline. He is depicted on Earth-616, engaging in a conversation with a bartender in Mexico. This bartender shares information about Thanos and the disappearance of people due to the Infinity Stones, specifically how Thanos caused an absence from existence for five years. In the course of this discussion, Eddie is unexpectedly transported back to his home universe, where he encounters a different version of the same bartender.

To those eager for connections between The Last Dance and other franchises like the MCU or Sony Marvel Universe, I regret to inform you that there aren’t many external ties apart from that one scene. No unexpected appearances such as Vulture (played by Michael Keaton) popping up in Morbius, nor any references to the events of previous Sony Marvel films like Madame Web. Even though it is set closer to the turn of the century, when Peter Parker was born, Venom 3 doesn’t give any clues about the upcoming Kraven the Hunter movie.

The Last Dance’s concluding moments certainly bring a sense of finality to the anti-hero’s story. If this is truly the end of the road for Eddie’s Venom, what about those post-credit scenes? Could an unrestricted assault from Knull still play out on screen? And will the symbiotic specimen that General Strickland kept lead to more Venom action? With no current news of the series continuing, one could wonder why the filmmakers bothered to tease such storylines.

In development is the fourth movie featuring Spider-Man from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but these films exist in a different reality. It might be tricky to incorporate the potential storylines from this movie into “Spider-Man 4” because of its multiverse aspects. At the end of “No Way Home,” Venom left a fragment of himself in Peter’s universe (616). Therefore, it is plausible that symbiotes could play a part in Spidey’s future escapades, but it remains uncertain how or what form this symbiote narrative might take.
