After The Penguin, Matt Reeves has already talked to HBO about more Batman spinoffs
As a movie enthusiast with over three decades of cinematic experiences under my belt, I can confidently say that “The Penguin” has been one of the most delightful surprises this year. The show’s success is a testament to Colin Farrell’s electrifying performance and Matt Reeves’ captivating storytelling.
As a movie enthusiast, I can’t contain my excitement! Just two episodes remain of “The Penguin”, and I firmly believe they’re going to leave everyone spellbound. This spinoff from Matt Reeves’ blockbuster “The Batman” has surpassed all expectations, garnering both critical acclaim and audience love, even for a series centered around a lesser-known Batman antagonist. Colin Farrell’s portrayal of the rising gangster Oswald Cobb is nothing short of electrifying, and with the climax fast approaching, it promises to be a thrilling conclusion.
Following the success of “The Penguin”, there’s a possibility of more shows in the universe that Matt Reeves has called “The Batman Epic Crime Saga”. The director has expressed interest and they are discussing this with HBO. If it materializes, they aim to delve into characters who wouldn’t have as much creative space in other formats, similar to what they did with “Oz”. HBO seems enthusiastic about the idea, so we may see more from this universe.
Some potential ideas are already in the air. To start, the idea of more seasons of The Penguin has been floated; Farrell seems game but has made it clear he’s not looking forward to wearing all those prosthetics again. It’s also possible we could get a spinoff about another Batman villain. Episode director Craig Zobel even has one in mind: “Which other rogue would I like? I think that I would love to see Matt Reeves’ universe version of Poison Ivy,” he told Inverse. “I think that would be cool.”
Initially, Reeves and his group conceived several different concepts before choosing “The Penguin”, such as a series based within Gotham’s police department and another at Arkham Asylum. However, they altered their plans when HBO executive Casey Bloys advised them to aim higher. “As we were proceeding, there was a moment when Casey Bloys said, ‘Let me just confirm that you aren’t reserving the main characters for the cinematic experience. This is HBO.’ And I replied, ‘Ah.’
Seeing as the Penguin, who previously made an appearance in The Batman with Robert Pattinson portraying Bruce Wayne, had piqued our interest, we chose to develop a series around him. As I shared with Entertainment Weekly, my intention for each film featuring Rob is that the main narrative arc revolves around Batman and Bruce’s emotional journey. When discussing potential TV projects with Warner Bros., I expressed excitement about delving deeper into characters whose stories can’t be fully explored within a single movie. My vision is to create an expansive Batman crime saga, unraveling the tales of these intriguing characters.
According to EW, elements from the Gotham PD series were used in The Penguin, and Reeves isn’t dismissing the idea of reusing the Arkham Asylum show in some form. He explained, “What we’re discussing now are advanced forms of what was initially conceived. It didn’t fail; it needed to evolve. I would say it’s more about the journey towards its ultimate destination rather than something that didn’t pan out as planned.
In reference to the character Penguin, he is set to appear in the film “The Batman Part II”, scheduled for release in October 2026. Director Matt Reeves hinted at a time skip between the Penguin and the start of the new movie without disclosing exact details. He mentioned that Oswald Cobblepot, also known as the Penguin, serves as an entry point into the film. However, he couldn’t provide further details about the storyline, only expressing excitement about where it leads.
After thoroughly enjoying “The Penguin”, I’m just as enthusiastic; it would be quite intriguing if the character of Farrell’s Penguin took on the role of the main antagonist in the next film, given how well I’ve become acquainted with him through his own series. However, that’s a future prospect. For now, fresh episodes of “The Penguin” air every Sunday night on HBO and Max.
