In a recent interview, Craig Gillespie, director of the new Supergirl movie, talked about what Krypton will look like in the DC Universe. While fans only saw a small part of Superman’s home planet in the Supergirl trailers, the message sent to Clark Kent by his parents in the 2025 film Superman also gave some clues about Kryptonian life and customs.

Craig Gillespie talks about the DCU iteration of Krypton

I’m so excited to hear that the new Supergirl movie is really going to delve into Kara’s life on Krypton! The director, Gillespie, shared in a recent interview that we’ll get a thorough look at Argo, her birthplace, and the planet itself. It sounds like understanding her early years there is absolutely key to understanding who she is, and why she struggles with self-destructive tendencies when we first meet her. It’s going to add so much depth to her character, and I can’t wait to see it all unfold!

As Kara has highlighted in promotional content, the destruction of Krypton in the DC Universe wasn’t an instantaneous event, differing from some previous versions. According to Gillespie, he was inspired by the Superman films from the 1970s and early 80s when designing Krypton, and he also researched the history of Superman’s family.

The director of ‘I, Tonya’ shared that they aimed to expand on Kara’s background, specifically her father’s scientific work and academic connections on Krypton, to showcase the planet’s wealth and sophistication. Gillespie also hinted that the way Kara remembers Krypton will play a significant role in the story and that audiences will find it satisfying.

Ana Nogueira wrote the screenplay for Supergirl. The film stars Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem of the Yellow Hills, David Krumholtz as Zor-El, Jason Momoa as Lobo, and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll. It will be released in US cinemas on June 26th.
