Formula 1: Ferrari driver facing elimination in Mexico City

As a long-time Formula 1 enthusiast with decades of racing passion under my belt, I must say that this year’s championship has been nothing short of exhilarating! The tension is palpable as we approach the final stretch of the season, and the stakes couldn’t be higher for our contenders.

Only five Formula 1 races remain on the 2024 calendar, beginning with the 20th race (a new record of 24 races) this weekend at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

As a racing enthusiast, I’m excited about the 71-lap race at the 17-turn, 2.674-mile (4.303-kilometer) Mexico City road course in Mexico City. With 26 points up for grabs this weekend, there are a total of 146 points yet to be claimed by each driver throughout the remainder of the season. The competition is heating up!

In each race, a victory earns 25 points, and an extra point is given to the driver with the quickest lap time. Additionally, there are two more sprint races coming up in Brazil and Qatar; victories in these shorter races will earn eight points apiece.

After wrapping up the Mexico City Grand Prix, only 120 points remain up for grabs this season. That’s 34 points waiting to be claimed in Brazil, 26 in Sin City (Las Vegas), another 34 in Qatar, and a final 26 points in Abu Dhabi. I can hardly contain my excitement!

As a result, Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz Jr. is facing elimination in Mexico City.

Carlos Sainz currently holds the fifth position in the driver rankings, trailing Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 139 points. To keep his championship hopes alive after the Mexico City Grand Prix and moving on to the Sao Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos Circuit the following week, Sainz must ensure that he is within 119 points of Verstappen’s total tally.

This season, Verstappen has clinched victory in seven races, whereas Sainz, the only driver other than Verstappen to secure a win between May 2023 and April 2024 (out of the 23 races), has managed just one. Consequently, Sainz cannot surpass Verstappen if they end up with the same number of wins in a tiebreaker scenario.

In simple terms, Carlos Sainz can potentially surpass Max Verstappen by accumulating at least 20 more points than him in Mexico. However, this only keeps Sainz in the championship race if Verstappen finishes outside the top seven (six if Sainz wins and gets the fastest lap).

At FanDuel Sportsbook, Sainz is ranked fifth among contenders for the world championship with odds of 50,000 to 1. On the other hand, Verstappen holds the top spot as the clear favorite at odds of 550 to 1.
