Aurora SunBhie at BetBoom Dacha: [Dyracho] also comes with his downsides

As a gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that witnessing Aurora’s triumph at BetBoom Dacha Belgrade under the guidance of SunBhie was nothing short of exhilarating. Having followed this team since their inception in 2023, it’s been a rollercoaster ride watching them climb the international ranks from seventh-eighth place to finally securing a spot among the best.

In this rephrased version, the sentence becomes: Coach SunBhie masterminded an impressive victory for Aurora over second-place team, Gaimin Gladiators, at the BetBoom Dacha Belgrade. Check out our exclusive interview with him here!

Lee “SunBhie” Jeong-jae has been mentoring Aurora since the start of this year, and a significant achievement might be imminent at the BetBoom Dacha Belgrade. Since the team was established in 2023, they have never advanced beyond the 7th-8th position in an international competition. If they manage to defeat Team Spirit, their upcoming opponent, they will secure a spot no worse than fourth place.

The surprising news has left many in the Dota 2 community stunned, given they had recently eliminated Gaimin Gladiators, a team ranked second best globally following The International 13. GG made a contentious decision to replace Anton “dyrachyo” Shkredov with Alimzhan “watson” Islambekov. Meanwhile, Aurora has undergone changes too, fielding three new players since Sep. 22. Conversely, this team failed to secure a spot in the DreamLeague S24, the upcoming millionaire tournament following the Dacha edition.

In an exclusive post-match chat with us, SunBhie shared insights about why this game mattered significantly for Aurora, as well as voiced his thoughts on which team is dominating at BetBoom Dacha. He also discussed the new Gaimin Gladiators and provided updates on the current status of his career. Keep reading to uncover more!

Full interview with Aurora’s coach, SunBhie, after reaching the BetBoom Dacha LB Quarterfinals

“I’m going to start with the easiest question of them all: How are you feeling after advancing through what some could call one of the hardest match-ups of the lower bracket?”

As a gamer, I often find myself lost in the heat of battle, unsure of which teams are on the field. Yet, nothing beats the satisfaction of making it through another round, a feeling you fellow gamers undoubtedly understand too.

“Survive is quite a word. Do you feel like you’re struggling to get past some opponents?”

At this competitive stage, it simply means that everyone is constantly improving. Consequently, I never assume a victory is certain. Every day feels like a battle for survival because outcomes can change rapidly. Frankly, I’m thankful for our progress, and we’ve certainly faced numerous defeats to reach here, so yes, it hasn’t been easy.

“So, out of 12 void spirit games so far [at the BetBoom Dacha Belgrade], Aurora played this hero 6 times. I was wondering: If it’s not giving you the best results, why did you still pick it twice against a team like Gaimin Gladiators? What do you like so much about this hero?”

Honestly, I’m not sure if I’m fond of this character yet, I must admit I chuckle [laughs]. It seems we’re choosing this hero because we feel compelled to do so, you understand? The game was good, but if there were other options, we would certainly explore them. However, under the current circumstances, it’s the only choice that’s available to us. So, we make do with it.

“When you say you’re forced to pick it, is it because you feel this meta forces some repetitive heroes that may be uncomfortable for some teams?”

I don’t strongly agree with this current state of the meta. There seems to be plenty of potential for enhancements and modifications, but there are only 24 hours in a day. You can only spend so much time practicing or ‘scrimming’, as time is a finite resource. It appears that we might not fully grasp the optimal strategy due to these constraints. This is essentially what I’m trying to convey when I say we need to make the best of the resources at hand.

“Understood. So now you’re facing Team Spirit, who looked terrifying during Group Stage. Despite them being lower bracket now: What would you say is the strongest quality of this team that you should be careful of?”

Their team is led by seasoned managers and leaders who guide promising newcomers effectively. This combination presents both benefits and challenges. In my opinion, the upcoming contest should be balanced and exciting. However, I don’t view them as our most formidable adversary.

More exclusive interviews like Aurora’s SunBhie at the BetBoom Dacha Belgrade:

  • Ace: “The style we play is just the best”
  • Whitemon: “We’re still kinda new to each other”
  • Abed: “We have a lot of individual talent [in SEA], but not many captains”

“Then who’s THE toughest team playing this BetBoom Dacha?”

“Certainly Falcons, and maybe Liquid.”

“That matches up with this next question. Since you’re not considering Gaimin Gladiators as one of those, do you think this is a weaker version of them, or you’re just getting so much better as the tournament progresses?”

It appears that the team GG is composed of four exceptionally skilled players who believe they merely require a highly-skilled, intellectually astute “carry” to collaborate with, and if they have that, they are confident they can achieve victory together in Dota.

“It seems likely they’ll get the hang of it soon; they just need to find their rhythm. However, contrary to popular opinion, this transformation isn’t as unprecedented as some people are suggesting. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if it turns out to be less drastic than initially perceived.

It’s clear that playing with Dyrachyo offers numerous benefits. His laning phase is extremely powerful, allowing him to dominate opponents in the early stages of the game. He consistently makes smart plays that create unique opportunities that other players simply can’t replicate. However, it should be noted that there are also drawbacks to using him, which can sometimes be unpredictable and hard to anticipate.

In simpler terms, “When playing alongside these types of teammates, as a fellow player, you might find yourself wishing for more consistency. And that’s exactly what they appear to be aiming for! Watson seems like a very reliable player. Perhaps their combination will prove successful; in Dota, anything is possible.

Things may be tough, but remember, Team Spirit has proven they can pull off challenges similar to this in the past, like when Larl arrived and things turned out wonderfully. It might require some patience, as they weren’t initially at their best when Larl joined, yet they went on to win everything later.

Aurora SunBhie at BetBoom Dacha: [Dyracho] also comes with his downsides

“Totally with you there. On another note, you’ve also been coaching SEA for a long time. Is this the region you’re most comfortable working on? Or do you feel like the players from SEA have something that attracts you?”

[Chuckles] I’ve always held South East Asia in high regard as a Dota region. My respect for it stems from their consistent victories, and I must admit, I truly enjoy living here. However, it might not be the best choice for my career to stay in SEA. Yet, I’ve grown so fond of this region, its players, and even feel a sense of belonging as a SEA player myself. So much so that I identify with being from here. I simply want to excel and make this region proud.
