Formula 1: McLaren driver facing elimination in Mexico City

As a seasoned gamer who’s spent countless hours navigating virtual race tracks and cheering for my favorite F1 drivers, I can hardly contain my excitement as we approach the Mexico City Grand Prix! The stakes are high this year, with just five races left on the 24-race schedule.

Only five races are left on the groundbreaking 24-race Formula 1 calendar for 2024, one of which is the Mexico City Grand Prix taking place this coming Sunday afternoon at Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez.

As a racing enthusiast, I’m excited to know that there are still 146 points up for grabs for each driver during the rest of the season. Among these, 26 points can be earned at the Mexico City Grand Prix, which spans an action-packed 71 laps on a challenging 17-turn, approximately 4.303-kilometer road course located in Mexico City, Mexico.

In simpler terms,

Following the Mexico City Grand Prix, a total of 120 points will be up for grabs in the year 2024. Sprint races have been scheduled in Brazil and Qatar, which means there are 34 points available during each of those race weekends. Additionally, there are 26 points on the line in Las Vegas and at the season finale in Abu Dhabi.

As a result, McLaren’s Oscar Piastri is facing elimination in Mexico City.

At present, Piastri is in fourth position in the driver rankings, trailing Red Bull’s Max Verstappen by 107 points. To keep his title contention alive for the Sao Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos Circuit the following week, the 23-year-old Australian needs to be within 120 points of Verstappen after the Mexico City Grand Prix.

The reason he can afford to be 120 points behind and doesn’t necessarily need to be within 119 points is because Piastri can still own the tiebreaker over the 27-year-old Dutchman if he wins the season’s final five races.

If Piastri and Verstappen each win their next race, they’d both have achieved a total of seven victories each. They’ve also both come in second six times, and once third. However, Piastri has an edge due to his five fourth-place finishes, while Verstappen only has one.

If Verstappen manages to avoid finishing any race on the podium, then Piastri’s five consecutive victories wouldn’t allow Verstappen to surpass him in the tiebreaker, as he wouldn’t be able to increase his second or third place finishes total.

At FanDuel Sportsbook, Piastri’s odds for winning the world championship stand at a longshot of +14000, while Verstappen is currently the front-runner with odds of -550.
