Doctor Who star details new “disgustingly horrible” zombie role

As a longtime fan of British television, I must say that Generation Z has been a delightful surprise. Anita Dobson, best known for her roles in EastEnders and Doctor Who, takes on an entirely new character in this horror comedy, and it’s a testament to her versatility as an actress.

As a passionate Doctor Who enthusiast, I myself wasn’t instantly thrilled at the prospect of portraying a zombie in the horror-comedy series, Generation Z. But as it turned out, the role was an exciting departure from my usual characters!

The actress famously known for playing Angie Watts on EastEnders, takes on the role of elderly character Janine in Ben Wheatley’s Channel 4 miniseries. Following a bite, her character acquires an insatiable craving for human flesh that proves challenging to master.

Dobson clarified during their conversation with Channel 4, “It’s a gradual transformation,” he said. “She’s famished and unsure of how to handle her granddaughter. She can’t put her feelings into words yet, but she’s moving step by step towards becoming something new.

Dobson elaborated, pointing out that although Janine transforms into a repugnant monster with an insatiable hunger for anything obstructing her path, she nonetheless harbors deep affection for her granddaughter Kelly (Buket Komur). In simpler terms, there were many complex layers to the script as the character of Janine exhibits abhorrent behavior but maintains a love for her granddaughter.

In this production, Dobson was part of a talented group of actors that included Sue Johnston, T’Nia Miller, Robert Lindsay, and Lewis Gribben, among others. Playing her character in Generation Z proved to be an intriguing project for Dobson, who revealed that she found fresh aspects of herself through the role.

As a thrilled enthusiast, I received a note from my representative, hinting at something exhilarating that had appeared in her inbox. Upon reading it, I found myself questioning: “Could this be the real deal?” was the thought that crossed my mind.

After a brief conversation, I had the pleasure of speaking with Ben Wheatley. He was not only kind and humble but also an absolute joy to collaborate with. It’s astounding to think about all the brilliant ideas that emanate from his mind!

“I hadn’t tried this before, but as I went along, I discovered new aspects about myself.

“You may be older, but there are still good parts out there. You’ve just got to be open to them.”

Lately, Dobson played the role of Mrs. Flood on ‘Doctor Who’, where the enigmatic character was first presented as living next to Ruby Sunday.

Dobson hinted to RadioTimes.com in June that as time goes by, you’ll discover more about Mrs. Flood, suggesting she has layers that aren’t immediately apparent.

On October 13, Generation Z made its debut on Channel 4. For those without a subscription, all six episodes will be available to watch starting October 27.
