Eugene Cordero’s best comedy role isn’t in Star Trek: Lower Decks
As a devoted fan of both Star Trek and comedy, I’ve had the privilege of witnessing Eugene Cordero’s exceptional talent unfold across two very distinct yet equally captivating universes – the futuristic Starfleet Academy and the fire-prone city of Tacoma. While Sam Rutherford from Lower Decks has undeniably won the hearts of many Trekkies, it’s Eugene’s portrayal of Andy Myawani in Tacoma FD that truly left me in stitches!
In the upcoming fifth and concluding season of Star Trek: Lower Decks later this week, Eugene Cordero will lend his voice to the character Sam Rutherford once more. For those familiar with the show, Sam Rutherford is a key figure, being part of the main quartet. He’s frequently present in the series and is adored by many fans as one of their favorite characters.
It comes as no great surprise at all; Rutherford is a warm, humorous, and adorable character, and fans are drawn to him without fail. This appeal isn’t solely due to the writing but also because of Cordero’s exceptional performance as the character. The amount of effort he’s put into making Rutherford feel real is astonishing, considering that among his recent projects, it’s Lower Decks where he truly outshines.
To clarify, I must confess that not every production featuring Cordero has been watched by the author of this piece. However, his most renowned works have indeed been viewed, and among them, his stint on Tacoma FD stands out as the best.
Hailing from the same creative minds as Super Troopers (parts I and II) and Club Dread, Tacoma Fire Department (TFD) is an applauded comedy series that centers around a team of firefighters in Tacoma, Washington. Throughout the series, viewers witness humorous situations unfold, such as a playful rivalry with the Tacoma Police Department or an intoxicated episode confined within a glass elevator.
In this series, Cordero truly excels as he portrays Andrew “Andy” Myawani, a generally amiable grown-up who additionally works at his uncle’s carptending business. However, when he’s on duty for his uncle, a more assertive Andy emerges, creating some of the most memorable scenes in the show. Notably, Cordero’s character is instrumental throughout the first three seasons, contributing significantly to many humorous moments outside of the fire station.
One key family secret, unveiled about his mother and sister, was a significant part of the scene. Cordero’s response served as the finishing touch to this moment.
If you like Star Trek: Lower Decks, you owe it to yourself to check out Tacoma FD.
