The Grateful Dead named 2025 MusiCares Persons of the Year

As a seasoned music enthusiast with decades of concert-going under my belt, this news about The Grateful Dead being honored as MusiCares Persons of the Year feels like a sweet homecoming. Growing up in the 70s and 80s, their music was the anthem of a generation, echoing through the halls of our youthful rebellion. I remember my first Grateful Dead concert, sweaty and exhilarating, the psychedelic tapestry of sounds and colors blurring together in a magical symphony that transcended time and space.

The Grateful Dead are set to receive the MusiCares Person of the Year award in 2025, as announced by the Recording Academy this week. This recognition comes 60 years after the iconic jam band was formed in 1965 and swiftly emerged as a symbol of the vibrant counterculture movement in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district.

The highly respected MusicCare’s honor, known for recognizing an act’s charitable efforts and cultural influence while featuring a special tribute concert usually held two nights before the Grammys, will be given to original members of the Dead band: Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, as well as their founding guitarist and primary songwriter Jerry Garcia who passed away in 1995. The MusicCare’s gala, planned for January 31st at the Los Angeles Convention Center, will take place next year; the performers for the concert (with Don Was as music director) will be unveiled at a later time.

Laura Segura, Executive Director at MusiCares, praised the Grateful Dead for creating a community of followers and associates that embodies the principles of unity and mutual aid. She also admired the band’s persistent dedication to social issues such as environmental preservation and musical education. Quoting the surviving members of the Dead, they expressed their profound gratitude for being named MusiCares Persons of the Year, describing it as a tribute to the enduring influence of their music, which transcends the individual band members – it’s about the bond shared between them, the crew, and everyone who has journeyed together on this lengthy, unusual musical voyage.

The musicians emphasized that it’s not solely about the products we produce, but also about ensuring those who work tirelessly in the background, the unsung heroes who enable us to shine every day, receive the assistance necessary to persevere through whatever challenges life presents them.

In February of this year, Jon Bon Jovi was bestowed with the MusiCares honor at a grand event marked by performances from artists such as Bruce Springsteen, Melissa Etheridge, Jason Isbell, Shania Twain, Jelly Roll, and The War and Treaty, alongside others. Notable past recipients of this award include Joni Mitchell, Dolly Parton, Lionel Richie, Bob Dylan, and Barbra Streisand.

As a die-hard cinema enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the recognition for The Dead has come after their 30-date residency at Las Vegas’ Sphere by Dead & Company. In this run, Bob Weir and Mickey Hart breathed new life into the Grateful Dead’s catalog with the assistance of the pop sensation, John Mayer. During an interview with The Times in June, Weir hinted that the band might revisit the cutting-edge venue near the Vegas Strip, describing their visually stunning show as “a work in progress.
