4 things to remember ahead of Star Trek: Lower Decks final season

As a die-hard Star Trek fan who has spent countless hours traversing the galaxy with my fellow Trekkies, the announcement of the final season of Lower Decks is bittersweet. On one hand, I’m excited to see how the series concludes and eagerly anticipate the IDW comics that will continue the adventures of the USS Cerritos crew. On the other hand, it’s going to be tough saying goodbye to a show that has brought so much laughter, creativity, and uniqueness to the Star Trek universe.

Star Trek: Lower Decks is preparing to end its journey on October 24, 2024, as it launches its fifth and concluding season on Paramount+. The last 10 episodes will mark the end of this series. Despite having a successful run for a contemporary Nu Trek show, fans are regretful that it’s coming to an end.

Regardless of whether you’re feeling sad about its departure, glad you obtained it, or a mix of both emotions, here are four points to keep in mind as it approaches its last phase:

This is the final season of Star Trek: Lower Decks

For fans of Star Trek: Lower Decks, this is arguably the saddest piece of information we could pass along. The series is coming to a close and there will be no further episodes of the beloved animated-comedy. While it wasn’t for every Star Trek fan, it certainly was one of the more creative and unique entities that the franchise ever produced. Say what you will, but you can’t deny that. It was wholly its own thing.

The character’s story continues on outside of the streaming series

After the conclusion of the TV series, the tale of the USS Cerritos and its team doesn’t end there; instead, it moves to IDW comics in a fresh comic book series. Series creator Mike McMahan won’t play a significant role in crafting the storyline, but will be overseen by writer Ryan North, with Derek Charm handling the artwork. The premiere issue will hit the shelves on November 13, 2024.

Not everyone is leaving Star Trek after the show ends

After the conclusion of Star Trek: Lower Decks, Tawny Newsome, one of the voices behind it, is expected to reappear in at least one capacity. She has moved on to other Star Trek endeavors, contributing to the scriptwriting of the upcoming series, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. Moreover, she’s been cast in a new role, a comedy series set on a vacation planet, marking a first for the franchise as it might focus on non-Starfleet personnel as its primary characters.

There was a crossover with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which may lead to more cameos

Fan enthusiasm for the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds spin-off has been so strong that whispers of additional crossover episodes featuring the team and characters abound. With Karl Urban rejoining the franchise and Jack Quaid (Brad Boimler from Lower Decks) on board, the prospects for further crossovers and guest appearances seem promising.
