A Las Vegas performer is suing Taylor Swift, claiming Swift’s upcoming 2025 album, ‘The Life of a Showgirl,’ copies an idea she originally created.
Maren Wade, a writer and performer, has sued Taylor Swift and her record label, UMG Recordings, claiming trademark infringement, misrepresentation, and unfair business practices. Court documents filed on Monday detail the allegations, as reported by the Daily Mail.
An artist who worked for twelve years to establish their name shouldn’t lose everything simply because a larger company entered the scene,” said Jaymie Parkinnen, Wade’s lawyer, in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.
Oh my god, I can’t believe he’s actually suing! Basically, Wade wants the court to make Lizzo pay her money and, even more importantly, STOP using the name ‘The Life of a Showgirl’! It’s just… it’s her concept, and Lizzo is profiting off it, and it’s so unfair! He’s asking the court to put a stop to all this marketing with that title, and honestly, good for him! It’s about time someone stood up for what’s right!
Wade, who once appeared on America’s Got Talent, testified that starting in 2014, she wrote a column called ‘Confessions of a Showgirl’ for Las Vegas Weekly, where she shared stories about her life as a performer.
Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for Swift and Wade for further comment on the story.
According to a court document filed by her attorneys, Wade first trademarked ‘Confessions of a Showgirl’ in 2015 and has since grown the brand to include a podcast, live performances, and projects for television and the stage.
Wade’s team described the live shows as funny and honest stories about the ups and downs of working in entertainment, including bizarre experiences like being trapped in a giant cake or pretending to be a Madonna impersonator.
Taylor Swift’s attempt to trademark the title ‘The Life of a Showgirl’ was denied by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office because a similar product already exists from Isaac Wade, according to Wade’s legal team.
Even so, Taylor Swift and her team heavily promoted the phrase “The Life of a Showgirl,” presenting it as if they had created it themselves, according to testimony in court.
According to court documents, the label quickly appeared on products – on labels, tags, and packaging – and was used to identify the source of the goods in stores.
Wade’s lawyers argued in court documents that Taylor Swift’s promotional efforts were aimed at the same fans Wade had been building a relationship with for years.
Wade’s legal team argues that rapidly promoting the phrase to a large audience is damaging her reputation.
Wade’s legal team argued in court documents that these weren’t creative decisions, but rather business choices with resulting repercussions.
Wade’s lawyers argued that the product’s name wrongly suggests she imitated Taylor Swift, when in fact, it was Swift who copied Wade’s work.
Taylor Swift owns over 170 trademarks for names and phrases associated with her music and brand, managed through her companies TAS Rights Management and Bravado.
According to Wade’s legal team, Taylor Swift and her representatives are very knowledgeable about trademark law and actively protect it. They’ve previously taken legal action against vendors selling branded merchandise near her concerts to stop them.
They understand firsthand how damaging trademark infringement can be, because they’ve actually used that damage to their advantage in federal court when it suited their needs.
Taylor Swift’s twelfth studio album, ‘The Life of a Showgirl,’ was released last October and quickly became a massive success. It set multiple streaming records on Spotify and finished the year as the platform’s best-selling album.
