Is there room in corridos tumbados for a little bit of R&B soul? Linea Personal is betting on it.
Stockton-based música Mexicana band Linea has spent the last three years creating their second album, “Todo ø Nada.” The 13-song project blends sounds from melodic trap, R&B, blues, and the corridos tumbados genre.
After the album came out on March 26th, lead singer Gustavo Raya Garcia described the music as slow-paced with positive lyrics and a melancholic vibe. He also explained that their R&B sound is quite distinct from the popular corrido genre.
“Todo ø Nada” is fundamentally a melancholic sierreño album with strong influences from corrido tumbados. This is especially evident in songs like “Motorola” and “Tarot,” where you’ll hear expressive, high-pitched guitar playing and powerful bass tones.
The album truly stands out with the bluesy track “Caperuzita,” which opens with a haunting, digitally altered vocal that floats over the music like a guiding presence. This intro draws inspiration from Future’s “Wait for U” featuring Drake and Tems, and is complemented by playful banjo melodies. The band confidently blends genres, adding a lively, jazzy trumpet to the playfully suggestive song “Ülala.” The lyrics of “Ülala” were partly influenced by a memorable line from Luther Vandross’ “Never Too Much.”
Raya Garcia explained that their new album is a return to the R&B sound they’re known for, but with a fresh approach. They aimed to create a more emotional experience for listeners, so they incorporated new instruments into the music.
Let me tell you, seeing this band – Raya Garcia on vocals, backed by his brother Aidan Garcia, the incredible requinto playing of Jorge Ontiveros Zúñiga, and guitarist Edgar Lozoya Verduzco – finally release “Todo ø Nada” felt like a long time coming. It wasn’t an overnight success; it was a real labor of love, something they built slowly and carefully over time.
The band first gained popularity in 2024 with catchy songs like “Holanda” and the more emotional track “Hennessy.” They were signed by Jesús “JOP” Ortiz Paz of Street Mob Records in 2021, but often spent a lot of time in meetings discussing their creative direction at the label.
Raya Garcia shared that the process taught them patience and strengthened their belief in divine timing. While they had hoped to release the album a year earlier, she believes everything unfolded as it should.
The band headed to a beachside retreat in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico, to inspire their songwriting. They initially wrote around 50 songs, but eventually chose the best 13 for the album.
According to the group’s producer, Edgar Lozoya Verduzco, they primarily focus on the song lyrics when making decisions. They had some concerns about the song ‘P— Alcohol’ because of its explicit content.
Ultimately, Lozoya Verduzco aimed to be provocative with a song containing strong language, and its suggestive lyrics were similar to those found in Lil Wayne’s 2008 hit, “Lollipop.”
“We’re not scared to try something new,” said Lozoya Verduzco.
Linea Personal’s new release, “Todo ø Nada,” aims to follow the success of other popular Mexican American artists like Natanael Cano, who helped pioneer the corrido tumbado genre, and Fuerza Regida. Spotify reports that corridos made up 77% of all música Mexicana streams in 2023, demonstrating the genre’s massive popularity.
Lozoya Verduzco explained that they are greatly inspired by these actions and the mindset behind them. He emphasized that they must either match that level of dedication or work significantly harder to achieve their goals.
