Mark Gatiss and Daniel Mays in first look at new British crime drama
As a seasoned gamer of life, with a controller constantly in my hands, navigating through the labyrinth of drama and suspense, I can confidently say that the upcoming series, “Bookish,” has caught my eye like no other. With Mark Gatiss, a master of his craft, stepping into the detective’s shoes, it’s like he’s swapped his Sherlockian deerstalker for a dusty antique bookshop apron, and I can’t wait to see what mysteries he unravels next.
Digital Spy has unveiled the first images of Mark Gatiss, who plays Sherlock, from the Alibi detective drama titled “Bookish.
In the show “Bookish”, the comedian-actor, who was once portrayed as the troublesome brother of Sherlock Holmes in the BBC’s “Sherlock” series, now has an opportunity to take on crime-solving roles himself.
In this fresh period drama, Gatiss plays the role of the unconventional police advisor, Gabriel Book. He uses his extensive library of ancient books in his quaint bookstore to crack cases that appear unsolvable.
Due to the societal intolerance prevailing post-war, Book entered into a ‘lavender marriage’ with his friend, Trottie, who owned a wallpaper shop (similar to Polly Walker from Bridgerton). This was done to conceal his true sexual orientation.
Fresh photos provide the initial glimpse at the star-studded ensemble of Bookish, featuring Daniel Mays known for his role in Line of Duty, Paul McGann recognized from Doctor Who, Michael Workéyè, a familiar face from Black Mirror, and Joely Richardson, who starred in One Day.
Joining us as guest stars in season one will be Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, known for “The Queen’s Gambit”, Jonas Nay, recognized from “The Tattooist of Auschwitz”, and Luke Norris, well-known for his role in “Poldark”.
When it was first announced earlier this year, Gatiss hinted with enthusiasm: “I’ve long aspired, as in ‘Goodfellas,’ to become a detective! I can hardly contain my excitement about bringing this series to life and immersing viewers in our captivating portrayal of post-War London.
This era and our world are often overlooked, and I’ve been eager to create a unique, humorous, and exhilarating show. So, here it is – ‘Bookish’.
In collaboration with Matthew Sweet, a journalist and cultural historian, Gatiss not only appears on the screen but also contributes to the scriptwriting of the series titled “Bookish“. The initial season unfolds via three separate narratives, each split into two episodes.
UKTV’s head of drama, Helen Perry, expressed that UKTV serves as a platform for writers’ heartfelt ventures, and they are thrilled to collaborate with the extraordinarily gifted Mark Gatiss on his project, in addition to the dynamic crew at Eagle Eye.
Mark’s distinctive detective tale brims with cleverness and emotion, featuring a core, non-romantic love narrative destined to captivate viewers.
“Since Book is openly gay, in a time when being so was against the law, we take great pride in how the drama highlights an essential LGBTQ+ narrative. The fact that Eagle Eye has already assembled such a distinguished cast for the show underscores that Bookish, as it’s called, will undoubtedly be a hit.
I’m thrilled to share that I’ll be experiencing the captivating six-chapter journey of ‘Bookish’ next year, right here in the UK on Alibi! Excitingly, a collaborator from across the pond will join us at a future date.
