Speed Racer Gets a Gorgeous Remaster

Speed Racer (played by Emile Hirsch) is a natural-born driver who fearlessly races his powerful Mach 5, leaving the competition behind. However, when he refuses a deal with Royalton Industries, he makes an enemy of the company’s ruthless owner and discovers a shocking truth: major races are being rigged by a small group of powerful and unscrupulous individuals.
To save his family’s business and the racing world he cares about, Speed must outsmart his ruthless opponent, Royalton. With help from his mother (Susan Sarandon) and girlfriend, Trixie (Christina Ricci), he joins forces with a former rival, the enigmatic Racer X (Matthew Fox), to compete in a dangerous, cross-country race called The Crucible – the same race that cost his brother, Rex Racer, his life.
Speed Racer Became a Cult Classic
The Speed Racer movie is based on the original manga (comic book) series that started in 1966, followed by the animated TV show the next year. Because the series was so popular for decades, filmmakers tried for years to create a live-action movie, and it finally happened with the Wachowskis directing. Sadly, the movie didn’t do well at the box office, earning less than $94 million despite costing $120 million to make. However, it still has a dedicated fanbase who believe Speed Racer is a hidden gem.
Emile Hirsch, the lead actor, mentioned that discussions about a sequel were underway in 2018. Although a sequel never materialized, fans of the original movie are getting a special treat: a newly remastered 4K version will be shown in theaters starting April 25, 2026.
