DJ Dan, a pioneering figure in West Coast house music and a key influence on California’s vibrant rave scene, has passed away at the age of 57.
I’m incredibly saddened to report the passing of DJ Dan, a true pioneer in American electronic music. It’s not just a loss of an artist, but a loss for the entire culture he helped create. For over four decades, he touched millions with his music, spanning five continents, and his influence was genuinely genre-defying. He wasn’t just making tracks; he was building a feeling, a way to connect with music on a deeper level. He often spoke about his life’s purpose being ‘to heal through music,’ and he absolutely lived up to that ideal. It’s a profound loss, and I, along with countless others, will remember him with deep admiration and gratitude.
The statement didn’t say how Wherrett died. He was supposed to perform at the Dead Ringer club in Nevada on March 28th, but he never showed up.

After funding cuts, KCRW laid off beloved DJs. It hopes new voices can save the music
Look, as a longtime KCRW listener, I’m really worried. It feels like everything that makes KCRW special – that commitment to finding amazing, diverse music and sharing it with us here in Southern California – is under threat. They’re facing some tough financial times, and it’s getting harder for them to stand out when you’ve got algorithms deciding what everyone listens to. It’s a real fight to keep that independent spirit alive.
Originally from Washington state, Wherrett relocated to Southern California and then San Francisco during the 1990s, a period of growth for the state’s house music scene with new festivals, groups, and clubs emerging. He collaborated with L.A.’s DJ Ron D Core on several popular mixtapes and established the record label InStereo Recordings in Los Angeles. He also helped create the San Francisco collective Funky Tekno Tribe, which became known for its diverse sets and helped define a unique West Coast club music style – a blend of psychedelic sounds with breakbeat, dub, funk, house, and techno.
He consistently ranked high in DJ Mag’s annual Top 100 DJs list and created several well-known mixes for BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix series. He performed at all the major dance music festivals of his time, like Ultra, EDC, Creamfields, and Dance Valley, and had three songs chart on Billboard’s Dance Club Songs chart, with “That Phone Track” reaching number one in 2004.
Music
Pacific Electric is a new business launching in Los Angeles, a city where the economy is starting to bounce back after a difficult period.
Wherrett achieved success with three albums charting on Billboard’s Top Dance Albums list, and he was a highly sought-after remixer, working with popular artists such as Depeche Mode, New Order, Lady Gaga, and Janet Jackson.
People involved in California’s electronic music community expressed their sadness after hearing the news. DJ Mark Farina remembered Dan as a genuinely kind person and a friend. Up-and-coming artists, like Jubilee, also shared how Dan had inspired them – Jubilee recalled that Dan’s early mixtapes were what first introduced her to the rave scene.
It’s hard to believe he’s gone. He left behind such an incredible legacy – all his music, the record label he built, those amazing mixes… and I’ll never forget being lost in the energy of one of his sets, truly finding myself on the dance floor with everyone else. It feels so much quieter now, but whenever I listen to his music, it’s instantly clear why we’re all heartbroken and why we should be so thankful he shared his gift with the world. He inspired so many of us.
