We need to see Harry Kim appear on another series sometime soon
As a dedicated Trekkie with memories of Voyager’s voyages still fresh in my mind, I must say that Harry Kim, the eternal ensign, deserves more screen time than he’s had so far. It’s been over two decades since we first met him, and yet, he’s barely moved up the ranks!
Star Trek: Voyager boasted an exceptional ensemble. Not every character’s narrative was top-notch, but almost each one played a pivotal role at some point. Yes, Harry Kim, our eternal ensign, is still a subject of popular memes. Yet, all the characters managed to win over fans in their own unique ways. Even after the series concluded in 2001, many cast members have reprised their roles or found a way back into the Star Trek family.
In a new twist, Star Trek: Prodigy reintroduces characters such as Kathryn Janeway, Chakotay, and The Doctor. On the other hand, Picard welcomes Tuvok and Seven of Nine into the storyline. Meanwhile, Tom Paris made a brief appearance in Lower Decks, and their last season will highlight Harry Kim, who was previously associated with Paris as his close friend.
Bringing in Kim means that there are only a handful of characters left form the main cast that haven’t appeared again in a Star Trek series; Neelix, Kes and B’Elanna Torres. Yet, of all the names who have appeared or have yet to, it’s Kim who deserves the most attention.
On the spacecraft Voyager, Kim was frequently the target of jokes and usually found at the bottom of the hierarchy. As an ensign who had been there for a while, people often questioned if he would ever get promoted. In the latest trailer for Lower Decks, one of the Kims we see is a lieutenant, leading us to speculate that it might be the version from the main timeline.
Due to the fact he’s been serving as an ensign for such a long time, it feels like one episode of Lower Decks isn’t enough to fully appreciate him. After spending so many years on Voyager without taking on a leadership role, we’re eager to see more episodes featuring Kim in action. In some alternate reality episodes, we’ve seen a bolder and more confident version of Kim, but it hasn’t been consistent enough to leave us completely satisfied.
It would be great if we could delve deeper into the character of Garrett Wang’s character. Given that he will reprise his role with Kalina Kim in Lower Decks and may do so again for a live-action spin-off, it seems likely that such an opportunity might arise. Since Star Trek often explores time travel, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the character of Tom Paris (Kim) interacting with the crew of the Enterprise in an episode of Strange New Worlds or encountering his friend The Doctor in a Starfleet Academy episode set in the future.
Seeing a full-fleshed out Kim is something we as fans would love to see.
