Star Trek Section 31 movie gets premiere date in 2025
As a long-standing Star Trek enthusiast with memories of watching TOS reruns on our family’s old black and white TV, the announcement of Section 31‘s release has filled me with a mix of anticipation and skepticism. The teaser trailer left me with a sense of intrigue about Georgiou’s past, but it also reminded me of the time I spent waiting for a certain Star Trek VHS to finish rewinding at the video store as a kid.
In Star Trek: Discovery, the character played by Michelle Yeoh, Phillipa Georgiou, was forced to depart from Michael Burnham and the rest of the crew when her body couldn’t adapt to the leap through time to the 32nd century. The writers removed Yeoh’s character from Discovery in season three, initially planning a spin-off series centered around Georgiou and Section 31. However, this plan shifted, and Paramount+ opted for a streaming channel movie instead, which started filming in January 2024. Now, the release date for the movie has been made public!
As per Deadline’s report, Section 31 is scheduled to premiere on Paramount+ on January 24, 2025. This release date applies in regions where the platform is accessible. Given that streaming services typically don’t adhere to strict broadcast times, it’s likely that the movie will become available past midnight on the 24th.
Although some enthusiasts eagerly anticipate exploring the covert side of Starfleet in greater detail through a full-length production, others remain doubtful about an entire film centered around the clandestine agency. To add to this, the preview trailer opted for a different approach by avoiding traditional orchestral music and the rhythmic beat didn’t resonate with fans.
But there are still plenty of Georgiou fans who are looking forward to seeing the return of the quick-witted, deadly former ruler of the Terran Empire. Though a killer, Georgiou became a fan favorite when the character was brought aboard Discovery. The teaser shows us the formation of her past so likely we’ll get to see how she became such a feared leader in the Empire. And while that teaser wasn’t exactly what all Star Trek fans wanted, Emperor Georgiou is. Hopefully, her presence will be enough for fans to tune into the premiere on January 24th.
