Cancelled Marvel project reportedly making a comeback

As a longtime Marvel fan who can remember the days when comic books were my only source of superhero thrills, I must say that the news about Sony’s Silver Sable project being revived has me absolutely ecstatic! For years, we fans have been waiting for this character to grace our screens, and it seems like our patience may finally pay off.

Currently, Marvel Comics productions are reigning supreme in both movies and TV shows. However, this shouldn’t come as a shock, as Marvel projects, along with comic book projects at large, have been holding sway for more than ten years. This prolonged dominance can largely be attributed to the remarkable success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Occasionally, due to various circumstances, a project may fail to materialize. This could be due to cancellations or prolonged delays in production, despite the popularity of the original source material. Such instances are disappointing, but they’re an inherent aspect of the industry.

In some unusual instances, a project might receive a second chance at life, and as per a recent study, it appears that a project featuring a Marvel Comics character could be one of those exceptions that’s been brought back from the brink.

Sony’s Silver Sable project back in the works, according to insider

According to industry expert Daniel Richtman, the Silver Sable project that was previously shelved is being revived by Sony. This means that a film about this character could potentially be in production again. Given that the original project went through multiple transformations before its cancellation, this development comes as a surprise. Nonetheless, it’s an exciting prospect since the comic book series was highly anticipated and never made it to the screen. If it does come to fruition, we might finally get to see if the hype surrounding it was justified.

Back in 2017, I was thrilled when Sony unveiled their plans for a movie featuring Silver Sable and Black Cat, dubbed as the much-anticipated addition to what is now known as the Sony Pictures Universe of Spider-Man Characters. This cinematic universe kicked off with ‘Venom’ in 2018, delivering a series of films focusing on Spider-Man’s friends, enemies, and associates, with varying levels of success. However, the highly anticipated Silver and Black didn’t make it to the big screen.

Initially, Gina Prince-Blythewood was named as the director of the movie, but numerous setbacks led to its termination. However, Sony chose not to abandon the concept entirely; they transformed it into two individual films – one centered around Silver Sable and the other around Black Cat. Later, this idea was revamped, with both characters slated to reunite in a Silver and Black television series. Unfortunately, this project also ended up being cancelled.

It’s intriguing to learn that Sony might consider reviving Silver Sable for a new venture, given the Spider-Man universe is currently facing a critical juncture. The response to their titles hasn’t been great, but the Venom films have resonated strongly with viewers and surpassed box office predictions. The upcoming third film, Venom: The Last Dance, marks the end of the Tom Hardy-led series. On the other hand, movies like Morbius and Madame Web haven’t fared well with both audiences and critics, struggling financially at the box office.

Cancelled Marvel project reportedly making a comeback

It’s possible that Sony is considering introducing another well-known character into their film or TV lineup (we haven’t confirmed whether the rumored Silver Sable project is a movie or series). While Kraven the Hunter is coming up, they will probably focus on expanding the Spider-Man universe with additional characters afterwards. It seems that Silver Sable could be one of the contenders for this role.

The character initially appeared in Marvel Comics back in 1985 and frequently assumes roles as both ally and adversary to Spider-Man. In her comic book stories, she is often depicted as a mercenary who tracks down war criminals, which explains her recurring conflicts with Spider-Man and other Marvel superheroes. If she features in the highly anticipated Sony project, it would signify her first live-action appearance.

Regarding Black Cat, there are whispers that she could soon make an appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). It’s likely that her path will intersect with none other than Spider-Man.
