Peter Dinklage crushes Hot Ones, recalls Charles Dance's "paternal" kindness on Game of Thrones set

As a gamer who’s been around the block a few times, I can confidently say that Peter Dinklage is a true gem in the world of entertainment. His portrayal of Tyrion Lannister on Game of Thrones will forever be etched in my memory as one of the most captivating performances I’ve ever witnessed.

Peter Dinklage, a well-established actor, has graced both TV series and films, but in our region, he will forever be remembered as Tyrion Lannister, the witty youngest son of Tywin Lannister from Game of Thrones. Since his time on Thrones, Dinklage’s career has been thriving; he consistently delivers new projects, which is delightful news for fans who cherish him as Tyrion and eagerly anticipate seeing him in future roles.

This week, the YouTube talk show “First We Feast” published an interview with Dinklage on their program “Hot Ones”. Here, celebrities eat extremely spicy wings while attempting to maintain composure as they answer questions. I had initially believed that Dinklage was using this platform to promote his recently released Western film, “The Thicket”, which hit theaters in early September. However, it turns out that Dinklage already has another movie out – “Brothers” – which became available on Prime Video on October 17th. This interview on “Hot Ones” was not for promoting “The Thicket”, but rather to discuss “Brothers”.

He didn’t only talk about Brothers, though it sounds like a pretty good time — especially considering it has a star-studded cast which includes Josh Brolin, Marisa Tomei, Glenn Close, and Brendan Fraser. Dinklage discussed the highs and lows of his very long acting career, including one fun anecdote from Game of Thrones. Watch the full interview below, or scroll on for a few highlights:

Charles Dance used to give Peter Dinklage “paternal” encouragement on Game of Thrones

Dinklage touched on a bunch of interesting topics, from his early days as an actor, to what draws him to a project to the importance of working with directors you trust. Since Hot Ones host Sean Evans is a master interviewer, he also got Dinklage to open up about some seldom-discussed things from his past, like the fact that he has a scar in his temple from hitting his head during a show with his punk band Wizzy at the legendary venue CBGBs in New York City during the early 1990s.

Indeed, he quipped. To put it simply, who am I? Back then, I was like this: ‘I don’t want to be an actor; I won’t do any cheesy commercials or anything like that.’ Instead, I did plays downtown for free, where I made the audience queasy with my vomiting. We were a punk band imitating the Beastie Boys, and yes, we had our share of fun. It was enjoyable, and yes, it lasted a couple of years. I even earned a neat scar on my forehead.

The part you mentioned, where Dinklage talked about making the audience nauseous, alludes to another tale he shared earlier in the interview. This tale was about an unusual stage performance, where he portrayed the chorus (or narrator), and ended up feeling queasy while seated on a chair affixed to the wall beside the stage, above the audience. With such an unconventional life, Peter Dinklage surely has many interesting stories to tell.

As for what draws Dinklage to projects, he had a quick and solid answer: “Dialogue.”

You can have the greatest idea for a film…but as an actor, what am I saying, you know what’s our dialogue? What’s the ease or tension in the wordplay that you’re putting on the page. I always like to rattle the cage of genres because people in comedies don’t know they’re being funny. So I like my comedies like really straight…Alan Arkin…he was my favorite. He was so funny because he just played it as like somebody who doesn’t think anything is funny…so anything that sort of points the finger at ‘this is funny’, writing wise…like a punchline in a movie doesn’t really work cause it doesn’t really work in life…

Transitioning smoothly to the topic of “Game of Thrones”, Peter Dinklage commended the showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss for their knack at crafting dialogue that sounded authentic. In an engaging story, it was revealed that during filming, his on-screen father Charles Dance (Tywin Lannister) would offer comforting words to Dinklage between takes because Tywin’s character was notoriously harsh towards Tyrion.

I love Charlie Dance, he’s one of my favorite human beings and he played my father on the show and all my father…did on the show was humiliate me and sentence me to death…so he made a habit, ’cause we would get really invested in those things…talk about great dialogue, Dan Weiss and David Benioff gave us the greatest dialogue, so it really felt really lived in and fun and scary at times…so he would just like, between every take, he would come over and just gently touch me on the shoulder. We wouldn’t hug it out ’cause we had no time, but he would always make a point to give me a little [pats table]. And it felt very paternal too…he played a horrible human being, but he’s one of my favorite human beings and it was a shame how that one ended, on the toilet. Kind of like how this is gonna end. But yeah, that’s one of the more classic death scenes in a TV show I think.

Tywin’s demise in the “Game of Thrones” series, be it in George R.R. Martin’s novels or the television adaptation, is undeniably one of the most memorable. Considering how relentlessly harsh Tywin was towards Tyrion, it’s heartening to envision Charles Dance offering words of support to Peter Dinklage during breaks from filming. Despite his character frequently threatening Dinklage’s, it seems he only wished to give him a gentle nudge, a reassuring pat-pat, to let him know everything would be okay!

Right now, I can’t wait to rewatch something. However, if you’re interested in seeing Peter Dinklage in a fresh role, his latest film “Brothers” is currently streaming on Amazon Prime Video. And don’t forget to check out the “Hot Ones” interview where he sets fire to wings and takes us on an entertaining trip through his career!
