Rob Schneider became well-known for his roles in funny movies like The Waterboy and Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, but people are upset with things he recently said.
A conservative comedian caused a stir online over the weekend by suggesting the U.S. bring back the military draft, which hasn’t been used since 1973.
The 62-year-old, who has no military experience, proposed on X (formerly Twitter) that all Americans be required to serve in the military starting at age 18.
As a firm believer in our country’s strength, I truly feel we need to remember what unites us – one nation, under God, unbreakable. That’s why I support bringing back the draft. I think it’s time our young people shared in the responsibility of defending our nation.
He explained that every American would be required to complete two years of military service when they turn eighteen. They could fulfill part of this service by volunteering, either within the United States or abroad.
American citizenship offers incredible freedoms and opportunities that people around the world admire. But enjoying these freedoms requires responsibility and comes with certain obligations.
Safeguarding these essential freedoms will bring young people together – no matter their background or beliefs – to serve both their nation and, crucially, one another.
He pointed out that many countries ask young people to do national service, and that the United States used to do the same.
With ongoing conflict between the U.S. and Iran already resulting in the deaths of 13 American service members and injuries to over 300, many people reacted negatively to Schneider’s aggressive proposal.
One X user criticized the speaker, pointing out their lack of military experience and accusing them of hypocrisy. The user questioned why the speaker doesn’t apply the same standards to their own children, ending with a strongly worded dismissal.
Okay, seriously, someone just said the draft is a bad take, the worst take they’ve seen in ages! And honestly? They’re SO right. It’s not about freedom at all, it’s a sign of a truly awful government – one that’s so corrupt and pushes such terrible wars that people won’t even lift a finger to defend it. It’s heartbreaking, but they nailed it.
Daily Mail has contacted Schneider’s management for comment.
Schneider is a well-known Republican in Hollywood and has consistently voiced his support for President Trump and the Republican Party over the years.
He has three children, including his eldest daughter Elle King, who is a popular country singer.
I’ve followed this comedian for years, and it’s heartbreaking to hear about his strained relationship with his daughter, King. She’s spoken openly about how he wasn’t really there for her growing up, and the incredibly hurtful experience of being sent away to weight loss camp as a child. It’s a really tough situation, and you can feel the pain on both sides.
King shared with the Dumb Blonde podcast that they often find themselves disagreeing with his views.
Schneider later publicly apologized to King during an appearance on Tucker Carlson’s podcast.
He admitted he wasn’t the father his child needed when he was younger, and he sincerely hoped his child could forgive him for falling short.
Following recent comments by Schneider, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt has not dismissed the idea of a military draft, especially given the increasing tensions with Iran.
Leavitt explained on Fox News that while many politicians tend to rush to judgment, the president, as commander in chief, wants to carefully evaluate how well the military operation is going.
This isn’t currently in the works, but the president is smartly keeping future possibilities open.
Earlier this month, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated on CBS’ 60 Minutes that the US involvement in attacks on Iran will likely result in further deaths.
Hegseth acknowledged the president’s warning about potential losses, stating that any situation like this inevitably results in casualties, and unfortunately, there will likely be more.
I’ve never known a time when American soldiers weren’t coming home in coffins, and honestly, neither has most of my generation. But seeing that loss doesn’t make us weaker – it actually makes us more determined than ever. It strengthens our commitment to seeing this fight through to the end.
