NASCAR Cup Series team dropping a car for Las Vegas race

As a devoted NASCAR enthusiast with years of trackside experiences under my belt, I can’t help but be intrigued by the dynamic nature of Kaulig Racing this season. The way they’ve been juggling their third car during the postseason has kept me on my toes!

In the 26-race regular season of the 2024 NASCAR Cup Series, Kaulig Racing added a third car on just two occasions. However, they’ve already made three additional entries in the first six races of the four-round, 10-race postseason, including the last two events.

Two weekends past at Talladega Superspeedway, A.J. Allmendinger piloted the non-permanently assigned No. 13 Chevy for the fourth time in 2022, while Shane van Gisbergen embarked on his ninth ride of the season in the permanently allocated No. 16 Chevy.

Over the recent weekend, the situation unfolded at Charlotte Motor Speedway Roval in an unusual way: Two drivers exchanged cars, signifying that the No. 13 car was driven by someone other than Allmendinger for the first time in 2024. Previously, Allmendinger, who piloted the No. 16 car full-time last year and clinched a victory at the Roval, took charge of it for the team on 11 separate occasions during this season.

However, following their initial two-race run with three vehicles this season – which were only their second such events in total – Kaulig Racing will reduce to just two cars for this weekend’s race at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

Kaulig Racing not running three cars at Las Vegas

On a disappointing note, I won’t be seeing action this weekend at the South Point 400 in Las Vegas, Nevada. My favorite ride, the No. 13 Chevrolet, is missing from the entry list for Sunday afternoon’s race around the high-speed, four-turn, 1.5-mile oval.

In March on the racetrack, Derek Kraus made his first appearance in the Cup Series, driving the No. 16 Chevrolet. His debut ended with a 28th place finish. This upcoming weekend, it’s Shane van Gisbergen who will be behind the wheel of the No. 16 car for the tenth time this year.

In the world of NASCAR Cup Series, Van Gisbergen’s lone appearance on a traditional 1.5-mile racetrack happened during the Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway in May. His race ended with a 28th place finish.

This year, the No. 16 car has been piloted by no less than five drivers. Besides van Gisbergen and Allmendinger, Kraus and Ty Dillon have each taken the wheel for five races. Meanwhile, Josh Williams, a full-time teammate to both van Gisbergen and Allmendinger at Matt Kaulig’s Xfinity Series team, has made two starts so far.

The team’s other full-time entry, the No. 31 Chevrolet, is driven full-time by Daniel Hemric.

This weekend, I’ll be hopping behind the wheel of the uncharted #84 Toyota from Legacy Motor Club. It’ll be my eighth ride in it this year, and I can’t wait to see how we stack up against the rest of the competition!
