Agatha All Along episode 6 recap and review: “Familiar by Thy Side”

As a seasoned gamer and binge-watcher of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, I must say that the latest episode of Agatha All Along has certainly piqued my interest, but it’s come a little too late in the game for me to truly appreciate its brilliance.

As a devoted fan, I can’t contain my excitement as the long-awaited standout episode of “Agatha All Along” has finally graced our screens. But now, I can’t help but wonder if it’s too little, too late? In the thrilling sixth episode of season 1, we unravel the mystery surrounding the enigmatic teenager. Who is this elusive figure and what led him to seek out Agatha? Let’s journey together into the heart of the story!

Familiar by Thy Side

The entire tale unfolds as the background of a teen named Billy Kaplan. His Bar mitzvah proceeds smoothly, with him reading from the Torah and enjoying festivities afterwards with his nearest companions. However, trouble ensues when he seeks guidance from a palm reader – none other than Lilia. Strangely enough, her prophecy reveals that there are two entities linked to Billy, but she fails to provide an explanation.

Whenever he departs, I secretly inscribe a symbol onto something and tuck it away within his coat. This very same emblem mysteriously materializes above his lips whenever he attempts to disclose his identity and origin to Agatha and her coven.

The Bar mitzvah festivities are cut short when alerts about Westview are broadcasted. As Billy and his family leave, they spot the crimson shield Wanda had erected over the town. On their way home, their car collides with a tree, resulting in Billy’s death. However, to their surprise, he miraculously revives, only to discover that he is no longer Billy Kaplan.

Upon their arrival home, police officer Alice assists in rescuing her family member. Ever since the accident, Billy possesses the ability to read minds; however, he’s struggled with concern for his brother Tommy, concealing his ongoing emotional distress and confusion.

Billy confides in his boyfriend about the accident and together they discover that the dome Wanda placed over Westview had witchcraft symbols. He comes in contact with a man who was at Westview and together they go to meet him (we also see Jenny advertising her products in an online video advertisement).

In a creative twist (and quite clever), the man is none other than the deceitful Pietro whom Agatha had dispatched to be with Wanda, pretending to be her actual brother in the TV series WandaVision. He doesn’t exactly hide his animosity towards Agatha (whom Billy interrogated after reading Pietro’s thoughts), as he openly admits that she had destroyed his life. Pietro goes on to confess the terrible acts Agatha compelled him to commit, among them killing Wanda’s beloved pet dog, Sparky. However, despite his warning against seeking out Agatha, Billy ends up searching for her nonetheless.

Following extensive research on Agatha through obscure online sources (and by listening to Alice’s mother and her band from a record), he figures out a way to shatter the enchantment that Wanda had cast upon her. Consequently, we find ourselves at the start of episode one where he infiltrates her house, she recognizes him, and starts interrogating him while under the impression that it’s a police station – all due to the spell that Agatha believes has been cast.

Following our successful rescue of Agatha and embarking on our journey known as The Road, we’ve returned to where we started. It turns out that Agatha had been trapped in a swampy, mucky area where she discovered Billy’s true identity – Billy Maximoff – and learned that he was on The Road with the intention of locating Tommy.

As an engaged spectator, I can’t help but find this discovery intriguing. The events unfold, leading us to the next challenge. However, I can’t shake off my curiosity about Lilia, Jenny, and Rio. Why was Rio absent in Billy’s past narrative? And why does it seem as if Lilia feigns ignorance when it comes to marking that sigil on him?

Best episode of the season but…

Unfortunately, it’s getting quite close to the end now. It’s a pity, especially considering that there are nine episodes in all, and we’re roughly at the midpoint towards the Season 1 conclusion.

It’s unfortunate that Agatha All Along hasn’t been particularly impressive (it hasn’t left much of an impact at all), and it’s become evident during this episode that the sub-stories are more captivating than the main narrative. Initially, when the season started with Agatha as a detective investigating a crime, it was engaging and promising, but it was soon concluded prematurely.

Upon discovering the identity of Billy and understanding his journey that led him to travel alongside Agatha and her coven, I found myself utterly captivated and couldn’t tear my eyes away. The rest, however, didn’t quite hold my interest as much.

The show provides many answers, but also raises some queries that were previously discussed. It’s uncertain whether these unanswered questions will be addressed in future episodes or if they might get overlooked for now.

Ever since the debut of this show, I’ve been baffled by how much Billy seems to know about witchcraft, surpassing even the actual witches themselves. Yet, I can’t help but appreciate the way his true character is being revealed – antagonizing Agatha and harboring a certain level of mistrust towards her. The intrigue deepens with each episode: what fresh trial awaits us next? And what lies in store for Agatha, Billy, and their coven? The suspense is killing me!
