Megan Stalter, known for her role on the show Hacks, is quitting TikTok because of the platform’s connections to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
Following the death of VA nurse Alex Pretti during a protest in Minneapolis on Saturday, 35-year-old actress and comedian joined other celebrities in speaking out against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The recent clash happened just weeks after Renee Nicole Good, a Minneapolis protester, was fatally shot on January 7th.
Stalter shared on Instagram that she thinks TikTok was limiting her content because of her criticism of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Actress Megan Stalter, known for her role as Kayla Schaefer in the HBO Max series Hacks, explained she spent hours trying to upload a video that wouldn’t appear for one particular user. She then added a passionate call to action: ‘Get rid of ICE! Delete TikTok!’
The comedian, originally from Cleveland, explained more about why she left the platform in a post she wrote on Instagram, adding text to a picture.
Stalter wrote, ‘Hi so today I will be downloading my videos and deleting my tiktok page.
‘TT is under new ownership and we are being completely censored and monitored.’
Stalter explained that she couldn’t post anything related to ICE, even when she attempted to bypass the system by disguising her video as a comedy sketch.
Stalter urged her followers, ‘Let’s delete the app love you!’
Stalter also explained she was leaving TikTok due to concerns about the platform collecting personal data on users, including information about their health, religion, ethnicity, gender, and sexual orientation.
Stalter shared a statement on Sunday expressing her thoughts on what’s happening in the country.
She began by explaining that she’s a gay Christian and wanted to share something she had written that day.
I’ve honestly never considered myself a Republican, but faith – loving God and Jesus – has always been the most important thing to me, throughout my entire life.
If you’re a Christian who supports ICE or the current president, it’s important to remember that Jesus was put to death for speaking out against the authorities.
He challenged the established religious, economic, and political systems of his day, and as a result, he was killed.
Stalter encouraged Christians to live according to the Bible’s teachings, specifically highlighting the instruction to treat foreigners with kindness and respect.
Stalter said that people ‘can’t argue that God wants us to love our neighbors.’
Stalter explained that their community is facing a daily crisis: people are being hunted, kidnapped, and attacked, while the government is both harming its citizens and being dishonest about it.
Stalter said that the God who she worships ‘is extremely angry about what is going on.’
The performer stated they strongly feel this person is furious with the government, claiming they are allowing people to be harmed right before our eyes, and that we must continue to discuss this issue.
Stalter concluded her statement by saying she believes abolishing ICE is what Jesus would advocate for.
